I don't think that you know what ID is. Then again, neither do so many (most) Industrial Designers. :)

I've worked with many, and yet only a few are able to incorporate styling and functional use considerations. Most ID guys and girls, draw a pretty picture, or shape a block of foam, and call it done. IOW, they are just stylists.

Clearly those at Apple are better than that in so many other products; yet their phone isn't one of them. OTOH, the ridiculous minimalism prompts people to think the problem is with themselves, and certainly not the 'art' of the phone. --like posers at a hoity-toity art show, with hand on chin, staring at a blank white canvas with a single central black rectangle -- ponder ponder... pose... ponder ponder...

It's a phone, people! Gild it all you want; but that doesn't make the design better.

Different take: I like the slim feel, but if it were to slip I need some protection. Found this option (not a case) of 4 corner bumpers. It works for every fall angle - as long as it falls on a flat surface I guess. Allows me to retain the slim case feel.

Similar problem with the Droid Turbo 2 I bought a few days ago. Never had a case on any phone, but had to do something with this slippery bastard. Bought this clear silicone cover on Amazon for $8. Thin and grippy. Bonus: it serves to protect a vintage 1972 Atomic ski racing sticker :D

+1. Otterbox has saved my ask half a dozen times and I have the monstro I-6.

When the box is off the phone feels like a Snap-On tool and I am a Harbor Freight kind of guy.

In one or two more model generations, high end smartphones will be waterproof (at least for brief immersions) and much more durable (see Corning's new version of Gorilla Glass). Then it will be really irritating to have to cover them with a case. I really think Apple, Samsung, etc need to do as herroberst suggested, and build a texture into the edges.

^ You just described my Droid Turbo 2.

Although I have immense respect for Apple Inc, I've had those features for over a year already.

I personally can't stand the otter boxes (and others) for that reason - it's like taking your 911 and sticking a Chevy small block 350 in it and maybe adding a pickup truck bed for good measure.

If you want to justify it to yourself from "practicality" standpoint then fine, up to you but personally I can't stand anything that adds bulk, chunkiness or heft. One of the things that always has attracted me to the iPhone's is the industrial design aspect - which is excellent. They put a lot of thought into the appearance and "sex appeal" of their products even admittedly at the expense of some ergonomic considerations.

Do what you will but it always makes me laugh to see people with these slim, sleek, sexy phones stuck inside a 1" thick, coffin-like pocket brick.

It's funny but the sleek design was not even a selling point for me w my phone, just its features and performance . it's just a tool and it's all about utility.
