At car gatherings, why....

Is there always some guy who has to designate himself the official DJ and blast his stereo the whole time?

Or the other yahoo who insists on watching youtube videos with the volume set on "stun" the whole time?

These are not kids - these guys are in their 50's/60's

Dunno why...but one of the reasons I'd rather be in a quiet pool hall these days over a hot parking lot full of people showing off cars.

BTW, don't confuse "pool hall" with "sports bar with pool tables".

I've gotten a dis-taste for car shows recently from being treated like an outsider whether it be at a Porsche show, or at a muscle car show. I have better things to do than sweat in a field for 6 hours.

It seems to be a new thing to cram a ten bazillion watt stereo into your car.

Due to financial hardship I bought a Nissan Versa

So of course I found a BBS like this one to ask questions about my new car.

Folks are actually putting huge stereo systems into these tiny inexpensive cars.

Kinda makes me appreciate the... um... really nice bunch of Latino fellas that hang out at out at our park. Kinda funny how the younin's think they invented lowering cars and putting skinny tires on them.

Interesting, I don't recall ANY car gathering where someone was blasting a stereo. I only do 4 or 5 a year though.

This stereo crap and the guys (gals) that think their Nissan with a Folgers fart can exhaust at 6k RPM sounds great were significant reasons I started a European Sport car only show 5 years ago. It starts at 9:00 AM on Sunday mornings. The day of the week and start time weeds out a lot of the riff raff and the regular attendees generally aren't inclined to partake in such antics. More often than not, we literally stand around, drink coffee and discuss cars.

Here are a few shots from last week's gathering; 75 cars that including a ton of 911's, a Dino, a Muira and Countach and 5k mile Testarossa. A couple Nobles, a few Aston's, Lotuses and smattering of Audis and BMW's too. I asked one younger attendee with a stripped-down 328 IS to please "be cool" when leaving. He obliged . We tell the non-euro's that have to park outside the line up in the perimeter lots. They oblige as well. Not saying I have it all figured out, I still worry that someone is going to be a total a55-hat, but when you state the rules up front and enforce them, it is seems to work out more often than not.

Honestly Ive never understood the car show thing.

Why would I go to look at someone else's stuff? I like my stuff, if yours is better, I'll just feel bad. If it's worse, then you'll feel bad.

Cars and coffee? That I get. Social time,

This.

We have a loose meetup on Saturday morning in a theater parking lot. Typically less than 50 cars. But it all kinds of cars, no hype, real gear heads who like to talk. Only lasts 2 hours.

That's how our "coffee and cars" started. A couple of f-car and L-car guys going to the local high end Starbucks. I started going around when the car count was close to 80, but that included a 959, a gullwing, a Daytona, etc. We all made a point to buy coffee from the Starbucks and a cupcake from the cupcake place, since we were taking their parking and making them come in early.

Then, over about a year, it went from 100 cars, to 200 cars, to 400 cars, to 1000 cars, to so many cars that it disrupted the neighborhood. Burnouts, near accidents, and generally chaos. They've moved it several times, but it'll never be the 80ish cars hanging out talking crap for a few hours. Once the internet finds out, your small group will be destroyed

My little town has a few car shows every year...For the big one, they block off Main street all day, you pay a fee and have to leave your car all day.......

Sometimes, I roll in with my 73.5 or 1960 190-SL and park beside them in the parking lot of the Bank......I talk to the curious for a bit and wander down the street for a beer......I can leave anytime I want....Could not stand to sit there all day long.....

Right now in the Raleigh area there are two C&C events at the same time. Both of the events are starting to have issues with burmouts, loud music and over crowding.

I prefer a small C&C, going for a 2 hour drive then having lunch with a group of great friends.

The show I went to yesterday was at the California State Fair; it gets you free admission to the fair for the day.

Even at the cars-and-coffee events, there's someone who wants to be designated music supplier; it seems there are people that just need music. My MIL has one of those little Bose speaker setups that you plug your ipod int; she drags that thing everywhere.

We have an HUGE annual boat show (Long Beach, CA.). My older brother LOVED boats, he worked as a deckhand on a dive boat, he owned a few small boats (19' Searay then a 25' Bayliner flybridge) so I grew up to love boats too.

So every year we would go to the boat show... unfortunately neither of us would ever have the several $100K required to buy one of those beauties so we stopped going... my brother called it "mental masturbation".

Having said that I still like going to car shows to see historical stuff... we have a local VW show (that never seems to get advertised so I usually miss it ) and a woody show that is fun to see.

You had better stay away from Rennsport Reunions then. Because just about all the cars there are better than yours!
