Trailer quesiton: Anyone use "Tire Block" over the wheel tie downs?

I just got an open trailer for my Elise (pic below) and trying to figure out the best and easiest tie down solution.

Has anyone used an E-track based over-the-wheel tire block solution? Several of the trailer accessories sites advocate them and say they work great. The lack of lateral strapping makes me a little nervous but if it works it works?

Any experiences?

I love the over the wheel tie downs you pictured, the issue is that on a lowered car it's tough to get the straps over the wheels. Through the wheels is much easier when the D rings on the trailer are far enough to the side to avoid interference w/ the body.

+1

That's what I found with my 930.

That's my problem...clearing the fenders with the thru-the-wheel setup. Thanks for replying.

From the pic it looks like you could add D rings off to the sides of the trailer.

also a lasso strap used in conjunction w/ a direct hook ratchet eases tie down

a lasso strap has a D or O ring integrated in the working end, the bitter end of the strap then goes thru the ratchet, run the biter end thru the wheel then thru the ring then thru the ratchet.

I looked at these with D-rings in each corner:

I use chocks and tie downs both.

We use over-the-tire strapping and it has worked well without screwing with carefully aligned front suspension. Never had any problems but never crashed the trailer either. We used to cross-tie from the jack points but they would sometimes loosen with a little car suspension movement. The over-the-wheel straps have been solid.

It depends on the geometry but I have had much better luck w/ direct hook ratchets, like the blue and yellow strap. The 2 short ones are supposed to be used through the wheels but I found a lasso strap to be easier to use.

Thanks Bill. The blue one looks easy but no protection from rubbing on the wheels? Looks like you've tried them all!

The blue one is for a chassis attachment or for going to the thru the wheel straps, the direct fit ratchet can be used w/ either that strap w/ clip on end or w/ a lasso strap, wish I had a pic of the lasso, it's just like the blue w/ clip on end except the end is a D ring, you make a noose going thru the wheel then the D ring and avoid the complication of the short thru the wheel straps the padding on the wheel straps isn't really necessary. Thru the wheel doesn't work well w/ my car because the brake rotors are so large.

It looks like the rear will work with your proposed over the wheel tie downs. Why don't you buy the ones with lateral straps?

Sizing requires adjustable wheel nets, all the ones I find have buckles on the front of the wheel (adjusting the net length) that would rub against the wheel I'd think and scrape it up. I think the best solution is to have a set custom made, Mac's does that, not sure on the cost but then they'd be stitched to my wheel size with no adjustable buckle banging around.

Here's the setup I ended up doing. Man installing those e-tracks is no small task....I put in 100 bolts and I still have 36 to go (I ran out, will finish next weekend). I got enough in to test the car on the setup:

Looks great. I'd wait until the tires are cold before rolling it up on those tracks unless you can put something between the tire/track. I have aluminum diamond plate on my trailer and it will leave a imprint on hot tires.

But on second thought maybe it doesn't really matter to the tires.

I doubt that I would ever put the car on the trailer immediately after coming off the track, but the E-tracks themselves will get hot sitting in the sun as well. I agree that it might not matter...no different than all the tire worms and gravel you pickup on hot tires.
