I remember watching a documentary about 15 years ago about small arms manufacturing in Pakistan. Everything was hand cut and filed to fit. Tempering was done by packing the pieces in cork and putting the container in the fire for a while. The documentary showed an AK 47 clone being assembled and test fired.
You don't need to be too fancy.
