they are amazing!!
i just showed one kid how to run a total station to do a project survey..today. i briefly showed him how we still use trig and basic geometry to calculated the coords..we put it in the gun and he i did the "rod man" job and he got it done. we both put each other on speaker phone, and i talked him thru it. over the phone. it was pretty awesome watching him "click". this is a college freshman, so basic surveying is still a couple semesters away. he is trumping some of my co-workers. they do layout with string and tape measures. the other young lady is a high school senior unpaid intern. what a genius. we had her read a safety manual and she noted the the page numbers were off.. it's been that way for 15 years and she is the first to catch it. BONUS!! her dad is an engineer at CALFIRE. he wants to hire me!! better pay, better benefits. way better. opening is in sept. he wanst my resume. haha. i'll try. i just got the one kid OT hours for this saturday. we will survey and lay out the rest of the project when there is no risk of us getting run over by equipment. this is working out. i'm impressing my supervisors while showing some youngsters the ropes. i hope to get them permission to climb the bay bridge cables as a season ender. |
i didnt expect to get so much out of it myself. i might have caught a glimpse of how a parent must feel when a child kicksass.

That's awesome. Glad to here that it's a good experience for both. (I'm assuming that if you're happy with them, then they are probably happy too).

its a lot of fun watching kids "get it" or see the drive in their eyes. I taught woodworking and construction in high school part time for a few years after college. It was a lot of fun putting the kids into these intern jobs for the summer in large construction companies. They come back with a total outlook about life, jobs and higher education. Sound like you are having fun. And here I was thinking that they are running you ragged. Good for you on getting the kid extra hours. They really need the extra money to impress the girls they take out for the weekend.:eek::D

I'm glad you see the fire in your interns' eyes. My nephew is an intern at a construction co this summer. He did the same last summer as a junior at a different co. He graduates in CE this fall and I asked him about this summer's internship. He said he didn't like it and wanted to do something else after he graduates. I'm not sure what he's doing, but the regular workers told him they put in 60-70 hour work weeks. He really doesn't like that, especially unpaid OT. As an intern, he gets paid OT.
Kids these days. When I worked, 60 hours was the norm, until I got a gov't job. lol |

Being a mentor - at work, as a parent or to anyone that can use your expertise and input is greatly rewarding. Probably one of the best things about getting older and wiser is that some people are actually interested in learning from you!
I have had great mentors and remember all of them, even what I learned from whom. It is time to pay back and even a little forward. When I retire, I do want to mentor more than I can now at work - thinking about some of the outdoor youth programs but also engineering / academics. You may make a big impact on a young person's life and not even know it ... Edit: One thought to add - Personally, I like to have some younger friends. I make a concious effort to hang out with younger people. You can learn something from them too - plus, it keeps you young, especially if it involves exercise! :eek: G |
