The problem is that I can't just go in to McDonalds and say "I want a big mac, fries, and a coke". They will charge me the ala-mode menu price for these three items which is $7.37. Now if I know the value meal number, I get the same three items for only $5.69. They won't offer you the lower "value" price unless your order it by the number, and they can prevent that by making it difficult to find the "value" number with a scrolling menu.
Let the tinfoil hat crowd start screaming. Oh, and BTW, I have been to McDonalds about 2-3 times in the last 5 years, only for the Filet-O-Fish. |

The one McD's I ever go to (maybe 5 times per year, because I'm early to a one particular office in the morning and it's not open yet, so I might as well grab an OJ or a bite to eat) has recently switched to this newfangled electronic menu. Good thing I'm a creature of habit, so I know what I want to get. While standing in line, I tried to look for what I wanted on the 5 different menu boards and it was difficult to figure out options (sandwich vs #5 vs 1-for-$2-but-2-for-$3.50, etc) and prices. Maybe that's part of the plan, too--not knowing what you're paying until after you've placed your order. It didn't seem like a good change to institute, but then again I'm not a restauranteur. |

The online menu for Canada appears to be quite simple. USA not so much...
Sad that it would be easier to select from your phone than from the in-store 'menu'. |

Ah, see? Told ya. I will bet a paycheck that if you went to 20 random McDonalds, walked up, said I want the big mac medium fry and medium drink, than 16 of them would automatically give you the combo, 3 would ask if you want the combo, and 1 might charge you the full price. FYI, I have been to McDonalds every week because I apparently hate myself, but I for sure know more than you how they operate... |
The times I've frequented a McDonalds I always manage to wait on my order while viewing the plaque of Ray Kroc's facial relief hanging on the wall, and thinking to myself, all the innovative systems he put in place to streamline service with minimal labor, and then I look across the counter and think I've got front row seats to a Commodores concert with the horn section waiting for their part in the song.
