Juvenile Diabetes - Anyone Else Touched By T1D?

I retired this year and I'm dedicating my next four years to volunteering full-time for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). My niece was diagnosed at 13 with T1D and my wife's grandmother died from complications at 58. It seems that everybody I know has someone in their family struggling with diabetes.

I worked with the JDRF through the Porsche Owner's Club Laguna Seca event and they are a dedicated and altruistic organization. They are a great place to give back until my wife retires in 2020, so I've taken a committee position.

My family put together a team in the upcoming central coast One-Walk event in Santa Barbara. All proceed go to sponsoring research. If you'd like to help sponsor our team we would really appreciate it. Even $5 buck helps.

If anybody is willing to help, send me a PM and I'll reply with the donation link to our team.

P.S. This is NOT a GoFundMe account. You donate straight to the JDRF online link and get a tax deductible receipt.

Prevalence of Diabetes in Adolescents Aged 12 to 19 Years in the United States, 2005-2014 | Jul 19, 2016 | JAMA | JAMA Network

Recent article. The link gives the summary, which is enough...

Basically 1 out of 5 children in the US is diabetic or pre-diabetic.

1 out of 5. ONE OUT OF FIVE.

Kudos to you, because this is a massive problem that is being ignored.

my little girl (not so little anymore) was diagnosed @ 4 yrs old. heroic little lady learned to administer her own insulin shots that same year. it has been a tough road but she astounds me with her courage and commitment from day one. sadly little money for research makes it to type 1 as it is a beast with virtually no road to a cure

I'm very sorry your daughter has to manage this disease. There are no breaks for those affected. ...but there ARE breakthroughs on the horizon and $0.75 on the dollar raised by JDRF goes directly to funding research. Two promising studies:

The encapsulation project is incredible and we are hopeful this will come to market within the next 15 years. It’s in the very very early stages of clinical research. Some are calling this the cure for T1D.

Encapsulation - JDRF

Another area JDRF has funded is the artificial pancreas project. This will likely be available next spring. Participants in the clinical trials all had A1Cs under 7. This has never been done before and the FDA actually made an exception and allowed the participants to keep the AP system!!

I'm disappointed that no Pelicans have stepped up to help support our Walk team. Not even one single PM

Type 2 here, PM sent.
I keep saying I'm going to participate... but I guess I'm too fat and lazy to do the walk... maybe next year.
But I can at least kick down 5-10 bucks.
Good luck!

Type 1 for 28 years. While I applaud your efforts the sad truth is that Diabetes has become a HUGE cash cow. Lots of things that happen behind the scenes that would make your blood boil. My monthly cost for meds and insulin pump supplies runs about $200, and that's just deductibles.

Yes. Unfortunately, big pharma has no incentive to cure a disease. They (the C-suite execs and shareholders) make a hell of a lot more money when they can create maintenance drugs. Drugs that cure have no recurring revenue stream.

Oh now! I'm starting to sound like a democrat!

Check my thread on type 2
Basically you can turn around type 2 around and get off meds if you are committed to a strict diet and some lifestyle changes.
But...
Search the internet for the 'cure' to type 2 and you get pages of 'miracle cures' for type 2.

Being type 2 I have followed many of those links... to be led to many pages of testimonials leading up to the selling of yet another cookbook/diet (that can be found at the local library or online for free)

Scott, I did receive your pm's and replied. Thanks again for the donation! JDRF has a walk in Long beach too. The events are a lot of fun.

Regarding the quackery cure scams...for every devastating disease, there is some heartless opportunist waiting to prey on the victims of the disease. With type 2, nothing cures like getting in shape and eating healthy. It has to be a lifestyle change.

My family is planning on doing the walk. Our daughter, now 13, presented at 9. There was a good T1D "JDRF summit" in Santa Barbara this past January which we went to. Delaney has been on a pump for a few years and just started using a CGM. We are excited about the pancreas project!

Thank you for your commitment and efforts Craig! Hope to see you there!
