Sorry abou t that

I like Jay Leno. He's a good guy and I don't think he would promote something unless it did what it claimed.

But I've never heard of this product. BTW: I know it's not the same thing but I've been using Teflon based additives for a long time and I'll continue to use them.

ckelly78z 08-01-2016 02:56 AM

Plenty of guys are just using regular old Dino oil on their flat tappet cams and doing just fine. I choose to use oil that has a high ZPPD content for the protecting value of it. Let's face it, driving the car 4000 miles a year, and changing the oil once a year...it can't be about saving money.

RKDinOKC 08-01-2016 03:27 AM

Just use Amzoil.

look 171 08-01-2016 08:55 AM

I often wonder about the ZDDP additive. I run Mobil one in my 930 and have often wonder about that since I just had my oil changed. That oil gets changed every three years as the damn thing only get driven less then 500-600 miles a year.

Por_sha911 08-01-2016 05:53 PM

Any time you start putting additives into your oil you are running a risk. Every oil has (for better or worse) its own additive package. Too much is as bad as not enough. That's why its better to not mix brands. Instead of fixing cheap oil, just buy a quality oil that has the package you need and you're good to go. For my `87, I use Schaeffers or Brad Penn. Quality base and good ZDDP levels.

Well in reality not just any Amsoil oil, you would have to be using their Z-Rod synthetic which is their high ZDDP variety.

This was linked from the 911 Engine Building Forum a while back. It is interesting reading.

Brad- Penn oil.

I have some concerns. Never heard of the company. That's a concern because this is my business and it has been for over 20 years. They are in Oxford CT which is a nice town but being from CT I would have zoomed in on this awhile ago. Here are my major technical concerns:

The oil additive:
He states that there are issues with engine oil these days? That's just stupid. Todays engine is better formulated than it ever has been and it is stressed more than it ever has been - sales BS. But as for the additive, it appears to be a Boron compound in an ester oil - OK, Boron compounds for anti-wear have been around for sometime. The work fine enough but nothing beyond what the ZDDP does. But let us say it was better, the concentration of it is really low. There isn't enough in there to make a difference. Keep in mind, mixing anything with a fully formulated engine oil is just a bad idea. It doesn't work which is the least of your problems but it could actually work against you (competing reactions) and actually cause harm. I wouldn't use it.

The fuel additive
This subject matter is one I have very close knowledge of. The thing that really gets me is that he never comes out with a true claim per se, he does give the impression that his product can cure power and mileage issues. OK - lets give him the benefit of the doubt and assume they have a very energetic molecule in a formula that cleans and stabilizes and what have you. The ratio is not enough. The stuff would have to have other worldly powers to do what they claim at a 1/4 oz to 20 gl mix ratio. There is noting on Earth natural or synthesized that can do it at such a small ratio. Impossible. And he sites Bell Labs? I've been to Bell Labs and if that what he is talking about he is plain wrong. They have a few generators but I know who they use and it ain't them. If he's talking about AT&T then he is absolutely wrong because I know for a fact what they do and it ain't with them.

Grease
Titanium Sulfonate...yawn. Seen the numbers and nothing special. His claim at 0.5% water washout is done with polyisobutane added to the grease formula not the Titanium Sulfonate thickener.

Jay Leno was compensated handsomely for that bit. He's a spokesman.

I give the company 2 more years...

An interesting read - he actually site my company (ALS Tribology) as well! Problem is, he says that an oil analysis lab can't tell you whats wearing out and while he is right by definition he is wrong in that the data can tell you but only when you couple it with the repair records and the trends which we do.

Spoken like a true Lubemaster!

Por_sha911 08-03-2016 04:11 AM

This reminds me of the oil discussions back years ago when the the oil package specs dropped the ZDDP way down to protect "Kitty Litter Converters" or when synthetic low weight oil became the rage and air cooled owners were having leakage problems.

Since I'm going down memory lane, does anyone remember the the war in the Tech Forum over chipping air cooled 911's about 12-13 years ago?

patz 08-03-2016 06:59 AM

Stay with what ya know. I'm a VR-1 Race oil guy until it's not available.

same here.

there is no way that i would i put Mobil 1 in my car.
Rennsport's word is good enough for me.

David 08-03-2016 12:20 PM

The oil companies usually provide their data. Here's some for Mobil 1:

"Chips suck, case closed" - lorenfb

Neither me or my car have grenaded....yet :)

Wonder what happened to him? Maybe still selling chips for Steve Wong....

Por_sha911 08-03-2016 04:49 PM

IIRC, Loren took the maiden voyage to ban island.
That Steve Wong chip in my `87 since 2004 is doing just fine as well.

"Stay with what ya know" isn't always good. Some oils have changed formulas over the years and what used to be awesome for solid lifter or flat tappet cams is now a disaster.
