could easily be too expensive.

"Has rust in the rockers" could mean you are essentially buying an engine and a few small dollar bits.

Wow! I didn't realize 914s were going for that much. I should have driven mine through so many PA winters.

it's a converted 6

John Rogers 08-16-2016 07:25 PM

I sold my 914-6 conversion race car for $26,500 several years ago and it had a 2.8L engine with extra race tires (slicks) and wheels and two trans missions (M-S-X and K-Q-V). The parts we used to do the conversion all came from Jim Patrick in Phoenix as does this car and all worked great. I looked through the whole set of pictures (lots) and here is what I find:
- Front oil tank, oil cooler and Earls lines are good. Non ducted outlet for the air out of the cooler is bad.
- Good battery box in rear trunk.
- Stock bushings in shift linkage.....bad.
- No cover on transmission shift console, bad.
- Still has relay board and volt regulator, should get rid of it.

On the good side, the interior does look really nice, no cuts or tears and nice seats and door panels.

It could be made into a track car but it is essentially an old "German Hot Rod".

Surely before spending so much time and money on converting a car anyone would have had the rockers repaired as a first step?

Nice collection of parts held together by potentially next to nothing.

Looking at the photos... It seems decent. The Rocker panel rust is a concern (without seeing it) but the pan looks good.

you could not build it for that money

true but could you build it for twice that amount? ;)
It seems at time of sale used modified parts are worth half value of the price when new.

I guess I was lucky at the time I was in San Diego (2003). The engine rebuilding machine shop only charged $650 in labor for basic rebuilding my 914/6 and 911T engines, plus the cost of parts. I spent much more than that with the upgrades (case savers, piston squirters, head work, etc.). I'm not sure what it would cost today.

I think the total cost for the 914-6 engine upgrade to 2.7 RS spec was around $6K including the parts. The 911T engine I gave to Mike Lesniak to stop him from wasting his college time on trying to put a Corvair engine into a 914. I think that engine total cost was around $1200 in parts and labor.

The conversion costs hit in the oil tank, fuel systems and the 4 to 5 lug conversion.
