Cyber theft/copyright violation site or what??

There is a web site that claims it will give you a copy of a book I wrote (George Montgomery - Drag Racing's Gasser King). If followed the link and it goes to some strange site that plays 20 seconds of bad music while showing a really bad photo of the book cover. It says you can download the book for free, but when I follow those instructions nothing happens and nothing downloads.
Anybody know what's going on?
Here is the URL.

Ohio George Montgomery Drag Racing's Gasser King | EbookPedia

Turn your ad blocker off.

The end link takes you here.

https://www.playster.com/us/en

They bill themselves as "The Netflix of Books"

It's possible they have a deal with your publisher.

The first site is an affiliate.

They make a percentage off referrals that sign up with Playster Partner Program

If Playster has a deal with your publisher then the whole thing is legit.

Well it's not legit because I am the publisher.

DCMA notice, legal letter. It's $10K per infraction penalty if you chose to go after them.

Thanks. I searched Playster's catalog and the book isn't on it. I wrote to them asking if they have it or are planning to put it on sale. Advised them that I am the author and my publishing company is the publisher.

You should also let them know about their affiliates deceptive practices.

Was just going to say that I doubt the actual content appears on the Playster site. Sounds like the typical affiliate-link bait/scam. Just notify them and they should issue the DCMA takedown on your behalf.

If he's never delivered it in digital form then of course it's not on there. Unless the people who printed the paperback gave it away.

I had it printed in North America (Canada) because I don't trust sending the digital files to an overseas printer (everything is digital until it gets printed - though each color has it's own file). They I have a friend who had a hardback limited edition book printed in China. They printed and shipped his book and then printed some for themselves. He sells it for $70. It's available from China for something like $20.

Not true - do you know how many PDF's (scans) there are out there of copyrighted material that get delivered/downloaded digitally?

Of course, but that's not what this is. I'm suggesting it's unlikely that someone took his paper book and converted it to e-reader form for playster.

Printing these days is almost always done from a press ready PDF.

Some people still send natives files, Indesign / Quark, but print houses don't like them anymore. They prefer PDF because all the work has been done. I always hate when you send a printer a PDF and all they do is rename it and send back to you as the digital "proof" for you to approve.

Anyway, back to the point, Press ready PDF's are pretty much fully editable. Couple of clicks and you've got everything you need to roll any common e-book format.

Agree it's unlikely that was done.

Yes, everything goes to our printers as PDFs.
