Same reason when you are in a long line at the grocery store a lady will wait until all her food is scanned and bagged... then dig in her purse to pull out her wallet and then dig in her wallet to pay.

You forgot to mention that look of complete and utter surprise, when it's time to pay...

My asswipe dog once locked me out of my truck when filling up and I had it running for her "convenience"......buthead. 40 minute wait for AAA to get in the truck. She could lock it but not unlock it. Bad training. 5F and freezing my butt off.

Try living in Oregon where it is illegal to touch the pump handle, unless you work at the gas station.

ORS 480.385 - Civil penalty for gasoline dispensing law violations - 2015 Oregon Revised Statutes

Usually only in the larger metro areas do the employees freak about it.

A proper functioning car bears little to no risk, but how about one with a compromised electrical system, i.e. ignition - 40kV sparks around gas fumes?

If you live in a place that you can't stand for 5 minutes without A/C or heat, you really should consider moving.

I lived in Gresham for two years and I never had an issue asking and receiving permission to pump my own gas into my motos. With the Jeep, I didn't care.
Oregon's employment act, I assumed.

I've been screetched at by Oregon gas station employees for filling my own gas tank. It's so stupid.

I don't know about "instant" but I have read about the CEL light up for running a car with no gas cap on it.

My whole life (I'm almost 40) I've always shut off the engine while filling up at both self or full serve stations.
This summer it's been super hot and humid and a couple of times I've left the engine running.
Should I stop doing this??

I see women do it all the time. Most go back and sit in their cars like this filling thing is some big inconvenience.

Diesel locks on here. Gasoline requires a tennis ball under the trigger.

I leave my car running, I do not leave the nozzle locked on and unattended.

They took off the trigger locks when they started all the self-serve pumps.
Costco has trigger locks, I see some other stations are now starting to put them back on the pumps. The ultramar near my house has trigger locks.
