Tatra T87 the true great grandfather of the 356?
![]() ![]() Interesting read but this may have been the most advanced car of all time, and interestingly it seems to be the grandfather of the whole Volkswagen/Porsche family of cars. 1941 Tatra T87: The Jalopnik Classic Review Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Cool car.
Same one Hitler would not let his staff ride in because of a few deadly high speed incidents?

From what I can surmise Tatra, VW, and Porsche seemed to be simultaneously building the first "mainstream" rear engine cars in the early 1930s. I think they influenced each other. Preston Tucker and Corvair (Ed Cole) came later and took those designs to the next level in the mid-40's and late 50's respectively with 6-cylinders (both), water cooling (Tucker) and turbocharging (Corvair). Then Porsche followed in the early 60's with the 901/911 project which brought better 6-cylinder engineering and performance than those who had come before.
Ed Cole was actually building rear engine air-cooled Cadillac prototypes in the 40's dubbed "Caddibacks" before he started the Corvair project. Also one cannot ignore the influence of the aircraft industry on air cooled cars. The cooling fan system on the Tatra V8 is fascinating.

The claims were um..dubious..at best..but VW/Porsche settled with Tatra after the war.
There were a ton of ingenious shade-tree back-yard ideas implemented back then. Literally thousands of independent auto manufactures in fact. No good deed goes unpunished. Just look at what happened to Tucker Auto after he helped with the war effort. Auto-Union Project: The Tatra versus Volkswagen lawsuit "Despite Volkswagen’s infringement of some specific Tatra patents, there is no substance to popular claims that Hans Ledwinka – or Jozef Ganz for that matter – should be credited as the true designer of the Volkswagen. In fact, there was nothing particularly unique in Porsche's, Ledwinka's and Ganz' designs." The ethnicity of Tatra's designer may have swayed legal opinion at the time. |
