They are awesome cars, but depreciate like a peanut butter sandwich. Which makes them one of the biggest bargains out there for a used car, just make sure that you steal it because it will continue to lose value on a monthly basis. For current market values, (on any common car), check ebay. 11 or 12 A8s on there yesterday. Good luck.

Why do they depreciate so much?

A car dealer freind of mine just bought one at the auction to try. They seem to be a really good value for a great car. Are there service or longevity issues? Is it the aluminum body?

Just wondering - off P-car topic.

My wife bought an A8 about 1.5 years ago. She got a '98 w/26K miles on it, Audi Assured (used warranty) from a dealer for $35K. That purchase was in 2001, so a car with about 8K miles/year dropped to about half it's original MSRP in 3 years. Ouch. The car now has 50K miles on it, and is probably worth low-mid $20s. Ouch again, but less ouch than the original owner. Very nice car...total luxo, gobs of torque, and the quaatro makes for pretty good handling on a heavy car. If you get one out of warranty though I suspect it could end up being pretty expensive. They are very complex cars. Hers will be out in 6 months or so and she's considering a swap, especially since she doesn't have to commute any more.

audiworld.com is awesome, good people. My dad has an a8 it is awesome but for some reason its value dropped like a hot rock. Bag the a8. Get a6 4.2 it is same engine but lasts.

Most Audi's seem to turn into money pits at around 60K miles. I bought a 97 A6 Quattro Avant, with 25K miles, in March 2000 for $25K (almost 50% depreciation!). It had two years left on the 5 year/75K warranty, which was a blessing becases the local dealer has had to do lots of warranty work (transmission seals, both rear brake calipers, new sunroof, water pump, speed sensor, to name a few). From what I read on the Audi BBs, my experience is not atypical. As soon as the warranty expired, it needed new front struts, shocks and rear transmission pinion seal (total $1600). As a precaution, I had the timing belt replaced ($350) at 55K miles, because lots of them break well before the 90K recommended change period. I will probably sell it in the spring ...
There is a good reason why Audis depreciate so fast: they are unreliable and very expensive to repair. I love my Audi - the way it drives, looks and feels - but I would never buy another Audi, unless I planned to sell before the warranty expired. On the bright side, friends who own Volvos tell me stories that make my experience seem cheap by comparison.

It has been a while since I owned one - but I loved both of the ones I owned, and their longevity seemed very good.

I had an 87 Coupe which I put 150K on and had almost no repairs other than the stupid digital dash.

I sold it with about 180k and it had a bad ring - but no other problems (in hindsite I should have rebuilt the engine and kept the car because I loved it.

I then had a 1991 90 Quattro. Which I also liked very much - but didn't have more than a year or so. It was totaled in an 18 car pile-up. My wife and I walked away without a scratch - but the car was toatled.

NOSTATIC - knowing you - I'm sure you drove everything around. How did it compare to a 740?

I have had a 100cs, 90 quattro, a6 quattro, s4 quattro. All great cars. I buy used (5k-20k miles)and sell before 100K. I have put over 270k on Audis without a problem...but I would sell before the warranty is up.

Hmm, not sure if that's really a good generalization, although it can be said about most German cars. German/Northern European cars are durable but still require expensive maintenance--Japanese cars are reliable, requiring little maintenance, but when they go, they're gone.

BY Comparison..... I own a 98 Ford F150 with 68K on it so far I had to replace the tires at 67K. Front Pads and Fuel Filter at 51K...about $700.00 so far. I know trucks and cars are apples and oranges.

I owned a Rolls Royce another rock as far as depreciation goes.... the oxygen sensor on the Rolls was $60.00 the very same oxygen sensor was used on a Volvo $110.00. Get the idea... BTW I also owned a Volvo to...

In other words I got tired of paying matience on cars......

Actually, since the car was for my wife, I didn't get that involved...her gig. We didn't drive any 740s as BMWs are a dime-a-dozen out here and she didn't really want one. She almost got an A6 with the 2.7T engine...fun car to drive, but in retrospect the A6 and the 2.7T have been problematic.
