My dads 74 Chevy had a air pump that pushed fresh air into the exhaust via a belt driven air pump. After the warrantee was over he removed it and plugged the holes in the exhaust manifolds. He gained about 2 mpg with the pump gone. When he sold the car it had about 300,000 miles on it so any increase in mpg was needed. :)

No smog checks here....
