I have used this method many times. They seem to like to dig under my utility shed in the back yard. I get one about every couple of years. The last one caught me off guard. It rained pretty heavy all night after the skunk set off the trap. All I knew is that there was a skunk in the trap as I did not want to inspect too closely. Got the blanket over the trap no problem but when I tried to pick up the trap to move it to the back gate facing the green belt, I about had a hernia. Dang that must be a huge skunk, the trap weighed like 50 lbs. At the gate, I reached around, lifted the blanket at the trap door end and slid the door up. A very normal sized but wet skunk bolted out and through the gate. I pulled the blanket back and found the trap was full of mud and sod. The poor critter was trying to dig out but only accomplished pulling the wet sod up through the 1" square grid in the cage wire. It had filled the trap with about 2" of muddy sod.

Yes, raccoons and skunks can dig like crazy, even through the mesh.

I ended up putting plywood under my trap. Stops them from digging.

one crossed the road about 50 yards ahead of me on a bike ride the other day. scared me as i didn't realize they are slow to spray. good info here.
