WEC Austin

I was curious to know if anyone was planning to go.

Went to the inaugural event in 2014. Had a good time but it was ridiculously hot and humid. Am waiting for the COTA event to be moved to Montreal :)

FWIW - the 2017 IMSA races are in May next year so unless WEC moves its race, this will be the last Lone Star Le Mans.

RonDent 09-08-2016 01:55 PM

Based on the number of people that went to, or talk about Le Mans, I would have thought that there was more interest in endurance racing. I understand that 2 endurance races in one day is asking a little too much for most people. I just hope it doesn't rain.

I was there last year, and would be there again this year were it not other commitments. It was hot as heck for my Canadian blood, but a lot of fun. Austin is a fantastic city, and the track is amazing.

I hear you Ron, this series is producing some the very best racing I'm seeing this year.
much less fuel saving cruising, many team competing for the win in each class.
exciting close finishes.

The driving talent, with the incredible performance from the Hybrids is amazing to watch.

Does get hot in Austin!

Cheers Richard

We're going. Looking forward to it.
The WEC race starts at 5:00 and runs until 11:00 so hopefully it cools off a little when the sun goes down.

RonDent 09-08-2016 05:11 PM

Hot? Are you kidding me? That's why I'm not working F1 there this year. Standing next to the track all day in a pair of Nomex coveralls is hot. The first year I worked F1 there I was putting ice inside my coveralls to stay cool. At least I can get by wearing my whites for WEC. Saturday is going to be a LLLooonnnggg day.

'46,
Where are your Seats? I'm at Turn 15 for Thursday and Turn 3 for Friday and Saturday.

stuttgart46 09-11-2016 05:42 PM

Not sure yet. I have some friends that are getting us seats.
I wanted to do a 1 day parking pass for the Porscheplatz but you have to do a 2 or 3 day.

I'll be there!

Chose to have my bachelor party in Austin this weekend too...going to be a good time. Looking forward to the race!

Where is the Porscheplatz?

I'm taking the whole family to F1 this year really looking forward to it, if I could I would go to the WEC too it looks like great racing. Ron I worked the first F1 race in Austin luckily the weather was great that year, haven't been back since can't wait...also doing a University of Texas visit for my daughter she likes the schools Astrophysics program.

RonDent 09-16-2016 11:32 AM

It's a little on the warm side here today. Just taking a quick break to get out of the sun. Still an hour left in the Cont. race. Let me say WEC practice under the light was too cool!

tevake 09-16-2016 03:03 PM

Thanks for checking in Ron. Really interested in your observations on the racing, after all that you must have seen.

Cheers Richard

Jealous jealous jealous! I've been watching this date since the calendar came out this spring, hoping and praying that there wouldn't be any kids' activities this weekend. Sure enough we have two football games. Oh well, such is life. Have fun!

RonDent 09-19-2016 10:11 AM

OK, Back from Austin. Get racing this weekend hope you all had a chance to watch it. First, sorry I don't have pictures to share. We're not allowed to take photos with cars on course. Second, I little salesmanship. A lot of the people I worked with this weekend were not trained marshals. In fact, for many, this was there first time on a track. COTA had such a hard time finding enough trained marshal that they had open registration on Motor Sports Reg. So in the future, if you would like to see what is like to be on the other side of the fence, please sign up. Better still, join the SCCA get your license and get properly trained. It's better for us/you and its safer for the drivers.

Good racing and enjoyed the telecast. COTA looks great in person and on TV. Thanks for the info regarding the lack of trained marshalls.

It's a great place to watch a race. It was just unbearable heat but when the sun went down it turned out really nice.
I'll post some pics ASAP.
