iOS 10 lets you delete native apps

...

Hahaha!

This version is nice!

Goodbye Stocks . . .

Porsche-O-Phile 09-13-2016 11:50 PM

Why do people hate on the Apple maps? I actually find them pretty good and useful.

jyl 09-13-2016 11:54 PM

I use Apple Maps more than Google Maps, because it works with the Apple Watch. Functionally I find it very similar to Google Maps, except Google has better transit directions.

Porsche-O-Phile 09-14-2016 12:22 AM

Maybe it's just me but I actually find the Apple maps easier to use (and they work natively with Siri, which is nice). Plus I have an aversion to Google anything (yes, really - I go out of my way to avoid using anything of theirs - I don't like and don't trust their wanton data collection / mining / accumulation efforts and go out of my way to thwart any attempt by them to get any info. on me).

I do occasionally use SketchUp (which Google bought, unfortunately) and Google Earth though but I even try to limit my usage of those not knowing what data they're helping themselves to in the background.

Backup before you update to iOS 10.

We updated a bunch of hardware at work today... And some of them became bricks with all data lost!

impactbumper 09-14-2016 03:12 AM

I am one of few that likes the update i guess [emoji57]

Updated 30 minutes after release, works like charm.

rcecale 09-14-2016 04:38 AM

Finally!!! An update worthy of me switching back to an iPhone, from my Galaxy S5!

Yet you connect to Google servers every time you visit here :). Not a fan either, but I've been using Google (and gmail) since about day one, before they were released...that train sailed away years ago :(

Funny. I stopped using Google Maps about a year ago and always seems to get where I want to go with zero issues. Hyperbole makes you sound silly in this case.

GH85Carrera 09-14-2016 08:52 AM

There are indeed several app I will enjoy deleting. The Maps is NOT one of them. I have found errors on Google maps and even my Garmin GPS. The all have errors. Sometimes one is wrong and one is right.

Deschodt 09-14-2016 08:55 AM

I like it as well.. Searching the pictures with keywords is good - although pretty generic, "water", "mountain", not "911" or "Alfa romeo" ;-) I like the screen turning on when I pick up the phone too, the more visible notifications on a locked screen, and the search page widgets seem pretty good. Other than that, not an Emoji person so I'm not sure what's up with those... hey it's free !

JavaBrewer 09-14-2016 08:58 AM

Have not updated but would immediately remove watch, ibooks, game center, health, tips, stocks, wallet, find friends.

jyl 09-14-2016 09:58 AM

"According to twitter" . . . ha ha.

I deleted Tips and Stocks, and took the oppty to delete a few third party apps too.

Wow. Your logic is suspect at best here.

You make a hyperbolic statement about the maps in the Apple Maps app being "completely worthless". I, and others, point out that they use the Apple Maps app without issue.

Then you say that you statement is somehow justified based on the fact that Twitter shows that the Apple Maps app is being deleted almost as much as the Stocks app. What exactly does that prove in regards to the usefulness of the maps in the Apple map app? Absolutely nothing.

Your hyperbole and logic make you sound silly in this case.

winders 09-14-2016 10:36 AM

Also, you folks do realize the apps are not actually being deleted, don't you? All you are doing is hiding the icon and removing the settings and personal data for the app.

jyl 09-14-2016 10:49 AM

Yes. But the code for an individual app doesn't take up much storage anyway.

Installed iOS 10 and Watch OS 3 last night. No issues.

First BIG problem... "Personal Hotspot" has become flaky. It keeps telling me to contact my provider when trying to switch it on.

Switching from 4G to 3G and then back again seems to fix it but it fails again after a few minutes.

My service provider doesn't have a clue. I'm betting a patch will be released soon.

Hmm.. I've noticed my reception in the same spots as before has dropped significantly (from 5 to 1 bar). Maybe a cell tower is down, but it seems odd, timing wise !

T Mobile released update to carrier settings.

I got a text from them yesterday advising to NOT update to 10 right now due to intermittent connectivity issues.

Me thinks a shared issue, partly 10, partly T-Mobile.

And after the update, the phone was flaky until I did a reboot, but seems to be perfectly fine now.

Meanwhile zero problems on Sprint.

Meh, I've been with T-Mo for 10-15 years. I have solid stable service, and always have. If I've ever had a problem, it was either due to natural disaster or a problem with the phone which I don't think you can blame on T-Mo.

I do like some of the updates from 9.3 to 10.0. Nothing earth shattering, but a few nice touches.

I probably won't use this new feature much, but it's kind of fun, if you are texting someone with an iphone or I assume ipad running 10.0, after you have typed a message , long press the send button. You'll see some options, there are 5 or 6 screen options when the message can trigger balloons, confetti, lasers, fireworks or a shooting star. You can also get some bubble effects including "invisible ink" where the text isn't readable unless you poke the message.

My phone seems slower and sluggish since the upgrade.
Things like activating Syri accidentally and slow opening apps.

I've closed all apps and rebooted etc.

Is it just me?

Mine is snappier... But only after I did a full reset... On a big update - best to backup and restore the entire phone from upgrade... Otherwise you get all sorts of werid slowdowns and used up memory that should be freed up. I got better speed and 5 gig back on my phone by doing a restore... I recommend you invest the 60 minutes or so and do it clean.
