Nice commercials, a little more artistic now a days. I fly mostly United and Star Alliance.

I'm no rookie to flying commercial (700K miles for work and counting) but flying for pleasure has to be balanced with great reward. Scuba diving. That is our (25 years married) new passion. Otherwise no thanks we love our home and the peace it provides just fine. You go Richard! Take photos so we can continue to travel with you and your lovely wife.

dmcummins 09-19-2016 05:56 PM

I rarely fly commercial, but I did put 25 hours on my little 4 seater last month. Took two trips, the wife likes to go places, I like to fly.

911boost 09-19-2016 06:19 PM

I am jumping on one in about 7 hours, Paris to Chicago, then there to Denver. My 911 is waiting in the parking garage and my kids will be coming over tomorrow. Sometimes going home is better than leaving...

Those are great, but I just can't get with it

Coolest photo ever! I used to do that stuff out of a Skyvan back in the day. All in good fun.

That first one reminds me of riding in my dad's '53 Buick, watching the road through the rotted out rear floorboards.

GH85Carrera 09-20-2016 04:25 AM

I hate flying commercial. It is just a total cattle car operation. It might be a bit better for First Class, but I just can't see paying that large premium to go up front.

Flying used to to be a quick way to travel. Not anymore, unless you are going on a LONG flight.

MBAtarga 09-20-2016 06:07 AM

Wife and I just got back last week from an 8 day trip to Italy - flew Delta both ways. I saw that first commercial a dozen times at least - every time I selected another movie on the video screen it played like a youtube commercial before my selected show would start.

Sorry - but I just don't see the appeal/connection to the flying public for that commercial. Maybe for recruiting?

I've flown a lot (3 million lifetime with AA). Even on its worst day, I love to fly. I get giddy when I drive to SFO (or any airport) and see airplanes and runways. Yes, I've had many miserable experiences, from cramped middle seats to endless cancellations and delays. I love to fly. Because even after 12 hours of the worst cattle class, toenail picking, bad smelling, lousy seat of flying, you wake up in an amazing corner of the world, seeing more things in five minutes that erases that few bad hours. And that's why you fly.

fingpilot 09-20-2016 08:04 PM

37 years of getting paid to do it, Don came pretty close to describing why.

Thanks, it was always the waking up, trying to figure out the light pattern of the hotel windows, trying to remember where you were.

Truth, brother. Nothing like the feeling of being half way around the globe, in an alien world. Sitting in a chair, coddling a glass of wine while hurtling forward at 550mph. There's not much that can compare.

FLYGEEZER 09-24-2016 08:24 AM

Did it for a living for 32 years. Would not wanted to do anything else. Much different in the cockpit, there ain't no romance in the cattle car section of any air carrier like the ad is trying to portray. And sometimes it wasn't very pretty or romantic in the cockpit.

legion 09-24-2016 08:43 AM

I loved flying when I was younger, but the TSA and the Comcast levels of customer service from the airlines have killed the romance. I'm apparently supposed to be happy about surrendering my civil rights and being treated like crap with no recourse.

I haven't flown in 3 years. Between the cost, the time, and harassment at the airport; if I can't drive, I don't go. I have driven between Atlanta and Bloomington 5 times in those three years, and once between Orlando and Bloomington.

I like to fly too, either as the pilot, or in First or Business class doing as you describe - drinking a glass or three of wine. However, I'm no fan of coach flying at all. Not in any seat (although a window seat is tolerable).

Tobra 09-24-2016 11:29 AM

Those commercials leave me feeling very meh. Maybe because I would not fly Delta if they paid me to use them. I used to like flying, it is no longer an enjoyable experience and I only do so when I have to.

I'm with Chris on this one... have not flown in years.

Mind you there is a practical point, some places I want to go are 6-8 hour drive and at that point I will bite the bullet and jump on a plane... and of course there is Hawaii, but generally speaking you get a certain kind of passenger on those flights.

When we were doing the long distance relationship (LAX-PDX) flew a lot of Alaska Air and JetBlue and never had a really bad flight.

I presume the videos are of first class... express line through security, big leather seats and free drinks, nice gig if you can get it... us normal people have to sit in the back of the plane. :p

I feel you, I've driven Charlotte to LA multiple times for races, just got tired of the "I could go to jail for nothing" vibe that commercial airports give off. That is about 32-34hr's if you do not stop for sleep. SmileWavy

Driving I-40 cross country, its *very* interesting, that all the time of days match the scenery from Pixar's cars movie, just as if you'd left a night race at Bristol. One of those details a person might never notice, unless they did the trip themselves.

Shaun @ Tru6 09-24-2016 05:44 PM

Journey or destination?

As a one-time United 1K for years, I love flying. Getting off the plane somewhere completely new, it's a fresh start and you can do anything.

That said I would rather drive from Boston to Chicago or Boston to NC and have had some fantastic long distance road trips with friends in which the journey was definitely better than the destination.

The two videos, especially the first, are meh at best though.
