McCarthy Alaska

Anyone ever been? I'm going to spend a few days there with my camera. I'm pretty excited. I was told to buy a can of bear spray prior to the trip and practice with it.

What caliber 'spray' are you considering?

I've never been past Chitina.

Summer is over. Getting dark and cold fast.

Be prepared for 40-50 degree temps, and probably alot of rain. Late September/Early October is a quick change month in Alaska....sounds cool though, I would go in a heartbeat.

just take a .22 revolver and grind the front sight off. it will be better for you.

I guess you plan to hurt the bear's feelings with that 22?

Edit: Or is this the joke about how the bear is going to put the 22 where the sun don't shine?

of course it's a joke, the real answer is a Remington 870 folding stock or the similar Mossberg with sliding stock, you aren't going to kill it but you can turn it.

The 22 revolver is just fine as long as it's a magnum. Put it in your mouth and pull the trigger once bluffing charges are over.

McCarthy Chugach Mountains are way more robust than near Anchorage where I spent a few years. Termination dust hits Flat Top in Anchorage end of August, early September. Get on it if you are going to do it.

I would love to go. Have fun. Post pics.

Recently got back from delivering a car to Fairbanks.
Ferry from Bellingham, WA with stops along the way. Spent a day in Juneau, got back on the next ferry to Skagway.

Drove from Skagway, through Yukon to Fairbanks. Though the end of August, the topography and colors between Skagway and Whitehorse are astounding. That would have been the nearest to McCarthy.

The entire trip was a Hoot, and sure beats doing the cruise ship thing.

Soon all will be white, with temps dipping below zero.

Rain makes for better photos:)
