Interesting little car

At a local car show today. A Dutton I think, kind of copied from the Lotus Super 7 maybe?

Triumph GT6 or TR6 engine.

Looks like a homemade ugly lotus copy with a few nice details. I'm just not a fan of the whacky bodywork.

from the look of the bits, I guess someones pre-'73 GT6 rusted away and left the chassis, drivetrain, and gauges.

Hi this is a Dutton Phaeton.A cheap kit car from the 80's using a Dutton frame and fibreglass panels and usually Ford mechanical parts but I know of one that had a Peugeot 205 engine and was a successful Hill climb car.It may have been ugly,it may have been crude compared with a Caterham etc but you can bet that on twisty roads a well species one would lose a Corvette of that era. There were countless makes of kit car available in the UK back then and the Dutton outsold most of them as it was cheap. I had a similar looking Sylva Leader kit car with Ford running gear and Vauxhall suspension which was a much superior kit,as proven by Sylva winning most races for which they were entered, but by the 90s it was superceded by much lighter kits with inboard suspension and often using big bike engines.I knew of one weighing 390 kg Road legal whereas my Sylva was over 550 kg but it handled predictably no was fun on Hill climbs and in sprints

Thanks petrolhead appreciate your input. This kit may be a bit ugly, but the spirit is there all the same. So at least "A" for effort.

They're not always pretty

Crude but effective. Old yeller had a long and successful life. So perhaps there's hope for all the mutts of the world.

Plus the owner never has to shovel the drive. I'd certainly like one, that is, if I could fit in it... do they come in a 46 long ?

Saw that car a few years ago. It was a refreshing change in a sea of million dollar Ferraris.

A real Lotus 7 / Caterham 7 / Birkin 7 is really cool.

I have one friend with a Caterham and one with a Birkin. Both running the Ford Focus engine in them. Super light, super fun on the track.

The real Lotus 7 hasn't been made for many years. Production is licensed to Caterham in England and Birkin in South Africa. You can still buy a brand new one today and there are several engine choices.

That's very cool. I like it.

For some reason it made me think of this.

Years ago, I ran into a guy in a Lotus 7 (actual Lotus from late 60s or early 70s, not Caterham). He was at a Starbucks meeting another 7 owner. Both also had Esprits, I think.

Looks like the highway road striping crew donated the paint (same color as the striping).

Owner really needs to spring for tires with tread.

I can always point out a owner built house to my wife as we drive around. This was an easy pick too.

Use these pics to cleanse your eyes,

If you've damaged them looking at my friend's Dutton S roadster, these might help.
