I think this board is a pretty good balance of on-topic, mildly on-topic, and off-topic. I visit other bbs's, and some are either all off-topic (useless), or rigidly on-topic by the mediators (boring, not well traveled, and hence, useless). The community here is pretty good at keeping things civil, especially considering the size. I think the occasional reminder and warning from the uberfuhrer are just what the doctor ordered, my caveats above not withstanding.

My tongue was firmly in cheek, okay??? BTW, anybody catch the game tonight? ;)

I appreciate that this BBS provides invaluable me with valuable 911 technical information. I believe that to continue to do this some discression must be practiced by poster - with help from the moderators when needed. The moderators must make decisions about posts and I believe they are doing an excellent job. Thanks.

As a Moderator for a non-automotive board with many forums I whole-heartedly agree with Wayne on the issue of keeping things where they belong. One and only warning may be a little harsh but he makes the rules here like I make the rules on the board I moderate and that's the way it is, no one has the "right" to be here we are all invited guests period. As for airing the email discussion well that was unprofessional and I would hope that Wayne would apologize publically to the individual if for no other reason than to keep this person from leaving the board, keeping a strong following here is important not only to our hobby but also Wayne's business. The party in question misconstrued the facts when he mentioned that he was a customer (as in the customer is always right), no one here is a customer persay i.e. this is a public board open to everyone not just paying customers of Pelican Parts Inc. and therefore when using the board you are NOT a customer but a member of a very special community with it's own set of rules which you must abide by or leave the community.

After I bought my first Porsche I frequented Rennlist until I found this board and realized it was a much better source of information and discussion about P-cars than Rennlist mainly because of the shear amount of traffic. A simple question usually gets a multitude of answers which means even the most obscure questions usually get answered which is not the case elsewhere, protecting this aspect of the board must take precedent.

Why should Wayne, in his own words, have to"waste (his) time deleting and moving posts that are OT", let alone explain his actions ad nauseum after the fact?
is this board not an important part of the pelican business?

This all is obviously worth Waynes time and effort. He has a legion of rabid 911 owners begging him for the date of the book release.....and most bbs visitors buy there 911 parts from Pelican
i would think so.

doesn't this board primarily exists as a marketing tool for pelican? after all we all potential costumers.

the fact that it is such a great community, just goes to show how successful it has been.

i believe that both parties need each other now. members want the board that pelican provides to chat etc, and pelican needs the customers.

you've done a great job here wayne.

While you might be right, does this imply Wayne should not run the forum by his own rules? If so, what rules should Wayne follow. I don't feel the fact we are paying customers, should change the way Wayne moderates the BBS. I believe everyone will agree it is our choice to visit this forum.

Wayne,

I want my two cents (CDN) in here as well. This board and your tech staff have helped me to no end! Although I don't mind the occasional off topic post (I just don't read it), I do think this is a community and everyone should be able to put in their (sometimes useless) comments, myself included. However, if Policy says post OT to OT (which I can't find any rules anywhere on?), then it should be honored.

I must however agree with airing dirty laundry on the board; you gave him one warning and that should be that. End of story.

Keep up the great forum and shop.

and what are the rules for when, what starts out as a legit post then goes right off the rails? - (one of Jacks building a better BB posts)
I'd rather catch the latest on the footy than be confronted with a eye full of soiled underwear!!

I for one agree w/ Christian (A Quiet Boom) on all his points except his Rennlist issues.
I used to be on 2 BMW motorcycle email lists that were supposed to be predominately tech in nature (per their FAQ post) but out of 25 emails per day 18 - 20 would be non tech in nature. I dropped off the lists because filtering out the OT postings wasn't worth the effort. I don't want to have to work to get to the meat.

i agree of course it is our choice - but pelican wants us here!

i was responding to another post about us not all being customers.

wayne has done a great job here - measured by the success of the board.

the board has two purposes and needs the members for both.

i should add that i use this board alot and while it is cheaper for me to buy parts the uk (mostly), i appreciate what wayne and his team have put together and so i buy goods from pelican anyway as a goodwill gesture.

Now that is almost PERFECT! The only thing that would be better is if you could run traceroute, figure out where the client machine is located, and then load in a REGIONAL OT pop-under!

For those who can't tell, the previous remark was sarcastic, and light-hearted in nature. :p

Just to clarify, it appears to me that Wayne did just that, and intended his private warning to be the end of the matter.

In all fairness, I think it should be pointed out that Wayne was not the first to make his OT email public.

The poster in question, I believe, did this himself when he cryptically (and, in my opinion, inaccurately) claimed in a later post on the same thread that he had "received a threatening PM from Wayne" and then questioned his motives.

Only after that did Wayne post the email publicly.

Great analogy, Wayne. . . and you are absolutely right.
Though, that doesn't mean you are justified (as the store owner) to pull out a shotgun and shoot the boombox off his sholder with no regard to "missing a little"
. . . unless, of course, it's it's the type of "Boombox" Leland makes.

It is Wayne's store.

Wayne makes the rules.

I have to agree.
