Yep, they have those Omega 3s that everyone raves about, and since they are small bottom of the food chain, they are much healthier WRT heavy metals and toxins than bigger fish like tuna.

Supposed to be good for the brain and attitude among other things.

I tried the sardines with garlic and oil/butter over pasta that was suggested above. It was very good.

I have not tried a stargazy pie, and not really that curious either. ;^)

No 'chovies, No 'dines! But growing up in jersey all we ever got were the nasty canned ones or the ones they put on pizza. When I started dating a Jewish girl she introduced me to Lox, now that I liked.

In a mustard sauce, on a saltine, with diced red onion or shallots. If I could get fresh ones, I'd grill them like they go in Italy or Spain.

My grandfather liked sardines with spicy mustard and red onion on Italian bread.

I remember drag-netting shiners as a kid, bringing them to my mom who floured and fried them live on the spot. They were fantastic. Great times at Hammonasset Beach. Shiners, crabs, eels, dogfish.

Here's another plate of fresh sardines in Italy prepared a few different ways. I've had fresh sardines at nice restaurants in the US and they're almost inedible compared to what you get in Europe.

Did I mention I'm somewhat obsessed with fresh sardines ;)

We go through a tremendous amount of canned seafood at my house. Here's a quick pic of the stuff we have on a shelf in the basement, and doesn't even include what's in the kitchen pantry. Kippers, sardines, and smoked oysters are at the top of our list.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1491159350.jpg

I tried those, they're good.

King Oscar double layer sardines were my favorite, but I have a new favorite.

We don't always eat a whole can, so it's nice to be able to reseal the jar, plus they are nice and small which is my preference and they have a very nice smokey flavor.

You can get them on Amazon, but we get them at a grocery store chain called HEB.

Haven't tried those crackers yet, but I like sardines with mayo on "Melba Toasts"...they are about the perfect length for the sardines.

I could eat sardines on playing cards and like it.

Melba toasts are wonderful for all sorts of things. I haven't tried sardines with Melba toast, but I bet they are yummy. I usually eat them with some sort of thin, crunchy crackers (kind of like those water crackers). They also have some flavors (I like the cracked pepper, the rosemary flavor is a different type of cracker).

I've been eating them with "Nut Thins" which are crackers made of nut flours.

I came across this totally by chance. It's funny the rabbit holes websites like wikipedia or youtube can take you down.

I did more research on sardines and why we can't get fresh ones in the US. The story said they go bad very fast, in less than a day. So you'd have to find a restaurant with a daily source. Doesn't seem that hard to me.

Interesting. It may be hard for us to find them here. I doubt that Gulf sardines if they exist are any good, but someplace like Seattle should have access or New England.

masraum 04-13-2017 03:15 PM

I still mostly eat them as a quick snack on crackers. I just tried some on toast which was quite a bit better than crackers. I've mostly been eating them either with mustard (just about any sort will do), but have also taken to having them with chipotle mayo and mustard. The reason that I just tried them with toast was because I wanted to try them drizzled with a little bit of good balsamic vinegar. They were very tasty that way too.

The missus agrees that we will probably try some of the recipes (especially the sardine/unagi don) from the videos above.

I remember Anthony Bourdain eating anchovies in Europe somewhere, but they were fresh. He said that all of the Americans wincing needed to understand that what he was eating was very different from what we get here that's super salty.

stevej37 04-24-2017 01:03 PM

They aren't sardines...but these are next to them in groc aisle. Great also with mayo on crackers.

I like the way this guy cooks. He chops his fennel right on the dinner table.
