Triumph Speedmaster/America, anyone?

I've been considering a Triumph and I really like the look of these. Unlike most cruisers the early ones seem to have decent power (60hp), don't weigh a huge amount compared to a Sportster, Shadow, or V-star, and I think they look pretty cool. They also seem reasonably priced compared to what people want for Bonnevilles, which are pretty scarce around here anyway (nearest used Bonnie for sale on Craigslist - Dayton, Ohio).

Any Pelicans own or ride this model?

I've never ridden one but often wondered why they're so inexpensive (used) compared to their other bikes. Perhaps it's the cruiser styling, but it seems like good bang for the buck. Also, I wouldn't be afraid of an earlier carb'd bike either. And heck, it's a Triumph!

I'm a fan of the Bonneville styling myself, but the Speedmaster sure looks comfy.

HD, thanks for I meant that the standard Bonneville is tough to find (in KY), not the America. There are Speedmasters and Americas all over Craigslist in KY, I guess just because cruisers are more popular in rural areas. Searching Lexington and Louisville, the two closest and largest KY cities turns up no Bonnevilles. And you see people asking $5k for a 10 year-old carbed model that was ,what, $7k new?

My favorite is someone currently asking $5k for the bike from "Peaceful Warrior" in TN. The plot of the movie kicks off when the protagonist crashes his Bonnie into a station wagon, so maybe not the best sales technique to bring up the movie.

Bonnies do hold their value pretty well. $5k is pretty much the floor.

I don't get that leveling off towards the bottom, though. Who pays five grand for a carbed '03 when an EFI '08 is $5500 or a new old stock one is $7k?

But I'll concede, you see a similar phenomenon with used Harleys. I've seen five year-old Sportsters with asking prices close to new ones.

They are pretty nice! A bonneville has a 360 degree crank, whereas an America has a 270 degree crank.

I'm buying a 2009 for my brother tomorrow in low $4ks, I think he will enjoy it a lot.

Another thing to look at is a late 90s thunderbird sport, it has the hinckley 900 triple motor and a cool look. Great motor!!
