I heard some of the areas will not see the crest of the river until Friday. It is still going up in some places. I guess they call SC coastal areas the low country for a reason.

I've seen first hand what the Tar river can do in Greenville after heavy rains years ago....it hasn't crested yet :(. The worst is over for some, but not everyone...be safe!

I'll take the unpopular opinion by saying in non-flood prone parts of Charleston most would have been fine by staying. I went around a number of neighborhoods within a mile or two of here to send pictures to people who left the city and what damage I saw was minor. Downed limbs were typically up to 3-4 inches in diameter, though there was some scattered small tree loss. Those were mostly blown over and only one connected with anything on its way down, however another caught a water main at a friend's house so they had that to deal with. Within the core of the city (inside loop 526) power was typically restored the day of the event or the following one. Water in the Ashley River drained quickly, possibly because the strong wind as the center moved away was blowing downriver. Not sure about Cooper and Wando.

Those I know in the area who ran into problems with flooding are in locations that experienced it last fall when 2' of rain hit, or in areas of ponding. Only one coworker is still without power and she lives somewhere out of Summerville. Trees and branches really seemed to be the biggest issue here. IMO North Carolina and other parts of SC had it worse than we did.

Power is still out for us. Last night I was walking the dog and looked up and saw this. I called the power company told them the pole number and address and said here's the damn problem. This morning still no power.:(

The winds from a mid Cat 3 and below hurricane are seldom the problem: Storm surge and rain are; timing, which side of the storm track you are on and speed of the storm are are the deciding factors.

The worst damage we have had on the farm (with 1500 feet of south facing waterfront on the Potomac, was from an unremarkable storm (I frankly don't remember the name) that was a low Cat I when it got to us but it arrived at high tide, the eye wall passed to the west of us (meaning on shore winds for the farm) and it was a slow mover.

Waves were breaking in my backyard, my seawall got hammered and there was significant flooding to the houses up the beach from me (they are 5 to 10 feet lower than I am). Creeks in the area flooded as well due to rains.

We also lost power for a week. Five miles away there was no damage, no power loss and very few trees down.

Hurricanes are often local, micro events.

I will stay for storms up to low Cat 3's...otherwise I back the animals and move to higher ground.

I was away from our house in NC; decision was made due to reports/models that the storm would bounce out to sea. It didn't bounce. My wife called me reporting hard rain/high winds. I returned to the house on Sunday to find no power, my boat sunk in the lake, and in the haste to be safe, my wife broke her foot. Many are worse off by far, and we got our power back on after four days (Tue). Boat is still in the lake and she has a soft cast now.

Ouch.

Good luck with the boat...I have been told that it is sometimes better to have the thing sunk rather than beat against a the pier/shore.

A buddy of mine years ago was a diesel mechanic on the gulf coast. The shrimp boat captains many times would sink their boats on purpose before a hurricane. They would remove all the electrical equipment and a few other things off the engine, plug up any openings and fill the engine with oil and pull the plug. After the storm and the boat was raised they would drain all the oil, replace it, reinstall the starter motors and everything else, crank it over and let it run a while before draining the oil again. With new oil it was good to go.
