Galaxy Note 7 Is Dead, For Good

Astonishing. Samsung has killed the Galaxy Note 7. Stopped production, told customers to turn them off and not use them again.

Pretty stunning setback for Samsung. Boy howdy heads are going to roll.

I like my Note 7 and have no idea what to replace it with.

Crazy. You think the pixel will fill the void?

You think it is just the battery supplier? Couldn't that be fixed? Who makes te batteries?

Don't you know the board room at Apple had a lot of smiles and high fives.

A NOS Note 4, which is the last user-friendly model they made (replaceable battery, micro-SD card slot, etc.). I could have easily upgraded to the 5/6/7, but saw the newer offerings as a downgrade IMO.
My N4 works perfectly for what I need, and runs flawlessly on Android 6.XX. YMMV...

Now banned from all flights, even powered down in checked luggage. Even the holdouts will be turning theirs in. Maybe some looney Western ranchers will defiantly keep their Note 7 rather than knuckle under to the Federal government, but they don't fly anyway.

Samsung is turning to the S8 for a 2017 launch, to repair the damage caused by the S7.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Firmware Enters Development Just In Time For February Launch Date : TECH : Tech Times

So . . . will the S7 fiasco cause Samsung to be more conventional or more unconventional in design, more aggressive or more conservative in S8 technology and features, to pull in or push out the S8 launch date,

Not quite. I flew Delta yesterday, and before we got on the plane at the gate, there was an announcement that all 7s had to be powered off before boarding and at all times on the plane, and that they could not be plugged in or charged at any time. I was surprised that they were even allowed.

I believe the ban was to go into effect this morning.

I love my Samsung phone... didn't have a 7 (no farking way I'm paying that kind of money for ANY phone).

My S2 was the bomb (until I sent it through the laundry) now I have a $99 Samsung with some funny name I can't remember (does everything I need it to do and more).

Isn't the 7 one of the phones with the inductive charging? I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

The way cell phones are pushing technology it is a wonder something like this hasn't happened sooner.

One critical design aspect in which they really f*cked themselves was in their quest to shorten sales churn times, they made the battery non-removable. If the battery had been removable, they may have been able to salvage the situation by substituting a different battery, or if your phone was getting "thermally unstable" you could pop the battery out and save the phone.

I'm writing an article on how Insurance companies feel about lithium batteries. I think there is something more than just the battery. I expect it is a double issue with the battery having metal particle defects and the charging circuit (fast charge) putting the current too high.

So just changing out the batteries didn't solve the problem. They had two battery cell providers and initially, the problem only occurred with one.

Could a software bug be introduced that would have caused the device to overheat?

Banned, but self enforced. Like I trust other passengers, and most of my family are taking flights this week. Might take some programming, but I would think cell towers/carriers could identify if they are in the vicinity of airports.

Samsung & carriers should shut them down.
