What's the PayPal scam here?
I am selling a car and here is the response. Is he trying to get my paypal info and do what with it?
Thank you for the mail, i am okay with the condition Likewise your asking price is quite reasonable and affordable considering others I've seen lately, I'll have it for the listed price. I'm interested and consider it sold as am buying it for my first son as a surprise birthday gift which i don't want him to know about it is until is picked up, so can you assure me i will not be disappointed? I work with the military air-force and presently in camp serving the nation which is strictly no calls. My Mode of payment is PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online, but i have it attached to my PayPal account. Since I'm requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal, I will be responsible for all the PayPal fees/charges on this transaction, if you don't have an account with PayPal, it's pretty easy, safe and secure to open one. Just log on to www.paypal.com. I hope we can make this transaction as fast as possible. Less I forgot, I have a Mover that will come for pickup once payment is cleared in your PayPal account and they will be handling the title for me, as i look forward to hearing from you with your PayPal information as requested below. Your PayPal e-Mail Address : Full name: Firm Price: Address for Pick Up: Phone Number: Awaiting your response asap.. Regards. |

Is there a delay between when PayPal funds appear in your account, and you can actually access those funds?
And in what situation these days can someone access PayPal and the Internet, but NOT access their bank account, or a telephone? Especially for the "military airforce", where "roughing it" is lack of 24 hour room service. ;-)

Thank him for his service. Tell him because of that, you're willing to save the car for him until his mover shows up. Just have the mover bring cash for the agreed upon amount and you'll be happy to hand over the keys and title.
I'm not savvy enough with PayPal to know how the scam works. You're best off just ignoring him.

I've received messages with similar wording in response to Craigslist.
Might as well consider it a Nigerian Scam. Doesn't even matter what's being sold. This is my standard response. "Did your mother have any children she loved or was proud of?" I never hear from them again. Don't waste your time. |

Most scammers these days claim to be military. It conveniently explains why they can't show up in person and also buys some sympathy. I personally don't know of a lot of people who when actively deployed who have time to arrange a vehicle sale.
I had a scammer post a car for sale on our local Craiglist. I e-mailed asking to look at the car, he told me it was in Topeka, Kansas in a shipping container ready to ship. He told me was deployed overseas but had set everything up before leaving. I told him I would be in Topeka during the week, tell me where it was stored and I'd look it over. (Of course I was just having fun at this point.) He told me that the container was locked and couldn't be opened. (So how was a sale supposed to work?) I told him I had an acetylene torch and it was no problem--where's the car? He stopped replying.

There was a thread here about one of us getting ripped off by a paypal buyer. It's pretty common- virtually every ebay seller wants a deposit by paypal, and the remainder in certified funds.
Paypal will charge you back on command of the buyer- it's a stupid way to get paid. PS I've had that scam tried on me off of craigslist on several cars I've sold. "I'm in another state and really want the car bla bla bla I'm in the Army and deployed.." I tell the guy my car is nothing special and there's no need to buy mine since there were many like mine locally near him, buy local, so go away. rjp

^^ pretty funny.
I responded with: I don't use paypal. I will offer a $300 discount due to your service. Please paypal a friend and have him wire me the money to my bank account. You can use the $300 as a commission to your friend. Once the deposit clears, the car is yours. Title in hand. He responded with a bunch more Blah Blah Blah ....... I need to paypal you direct. I think the communication is just about over.

paypal
papal is pretty simple, yes. you do not need to give them any more info than your email address you associate with PayPal OR cell phone number you associate with PayPal. they can send you a payment with only that information.
you can actually open a Paypal account, and give them your cell phone number. you can have them send you money directly to your cell phone. nobody should handle title for you but you. NEVER release title until you have payment in hand, and it clears paypal. Usually there is a lag there, so make sure the money is in your account before you do anything. get a cell phone number and address if you feel uneasy with the transaction. CALL them on the phone, then google them at the address they gave you to see if they really exist |

It is a scam, probably from someone outside the U.S. The way they say "Military air-force" is wrong as Air Force has no hyphen and should be spelled Air Force. Have them send USPS money orders, $1,000 each and that is how I sold my 914-6 race car to a doctor in Puerto Rico although a search of his info showed the largest private VW collector outside of Germany.
I would also want their personal info and once you get that do some checking. |

I posted a 1988 BMW M6 on Seattle Craigslist yesterday and within 10 minutes had an inquiry from "Sgt Kelly". I answered his 3 questions and received this reply in less than a minute:
"Thanks for the reply, I am satisfied with the condition and your answers to my questions. I'm presently in Home of the Combined Arms Support Command, Fort Lee Virginia and I've been in the base for some time and due to my new job. I won't be able to come for it, I will have a pickup agent come for it on my behalf, I request this transaction be done via PayPal and the PayPal charges are on me, so I will like to proceed with payment. Do let me know if you have a PayPal account?" Same scam, same bs. Rather than answer, I simply deleted his emails. ![]()
