Your Personal First Day of Winter is?
There is an official day for winter, but it does not take into account the actual weather or region you live in.
My personal first day of winter is when I put on long underwear, double up my wool socks, wear a hat and have at least three layers of clothing on - INDOORS. That day is today.:( At least it's sunny out and dry outside. EDIT: First day of winter used to be when the Porsche went in the garage, typically late November or on December 1st. As I've gotten older the cold gets to me more and becomes the greater factor. |
Snow, or when I have to put pogies on the bike.

The first day of winter is when I can find trails to ride in the snow!

I don't even own any long underwear or wool socks. Using your definition I guess I never experience winter at all. I am wearing my typical work clothes of shorts and a t-shirt right now.
So in your parlance my first day of winter is when I will be forced to wear jeans because it is cold. That will not happen until next month sometime in the middle of Fall weather. I will still wear a t-shirt. I only have one or two long sleeved shirts. |

Hopefully never...
Soon anyway. |
Winter to me starts December 1st and ends the last day of February.

When I put on socks for other than a formal or compression stockings event.

It's snowing as I type.......must be winter.
Put the plow front on the town one ton today and a new cutting edge on. Might need it tomorrow. Once the first flakes start to fly, which was last Sunday, I call it winter. |
Whenever I get to a place where there's snow, it's Winter. Even if it's just Lake Tahoe.
|
When it's under 80 for 3 or more consecutive days.
Still summer here. |

Winter starts here when I have to get the snow thrower out. |
Whenever I see Shepherd's Pie on the menu at the pub.

When I can have a fire in the fireplace and not have to open a bunch of windows to keep the house from getting too warm. Usually not until December or January.
|
When I lived in El Centro it was January 7th from 3am to 4am. That was the last day as well.

The first day I can hike it. Two years in a row, that was October 16th ..

We usually don't really have a "winter" here at all. Fall usually fades right into spring. We will occasionally have anywhere from 1-5 days of temps below 32°. After that it will probably go back up to the 60s and 70s. We may get 1 or 4 or 5 of those cold spells. There were 2 years in a row a few years back where we never cracked 32°, or if we did, then it was just for an hour or two in the morning and only by a hair.
When I lived in northern Japan, We would consider winter the first snow, and the first snow usually occurred on or around Halloween. It was usually just flurries that didn't stick. I also remember one year as a kid following my mom's footsteps in the snow to hunt for Easter eggs. |
Winter? Shorts and flip-flops everyday of the year!
