Took this out of a clients building in Vernon, CA about 25 years ago, they were going to demo the building. My client said I could have it if I got it out by Monday, it was Friday, my brother and I rented an industrial jack hammer and compressor and put a lag in the ceiling and used it to lift the jackhammer and vertically jackhammered out 2 feet of brick to get it out. We used steel pipe, to roll it, like the Egyptians moved their stones, and a come-along to pull it through the building. We jacked it up onto his heavy duty pick up truck. Two Vernon Police cars drove by and saw us jacking a safe into a pick up truck, neither one stopped to ask us why. I was smart enough to have a work order from my client in case I needed it.

The actuating bar is to the left of the safe as it is now partially taken apart.

Yeah, its 7 feet tall. Its securely lagged to the wall.

Chrome and Nickle plating is pretty extinct in SoCal due to the air toxics rules.

Don't know its all steel, but not a fire safe, maybe 3,000 lbs?

Here is what it looks like assembled. I ended up not having Shaun have his jobber refinish the handle, I couldn't justify the cost.

Add 3/4" sheetrock inside to give it a fire rating.

That's really cool.

Does it have that expanding foam seal stuff inside and around the door opening?

1930s, nope nothing like that. I got it for free with a 1/2 day of work.

True story, the day before the Northridge Earthquake, I just happened to have driven the old Aston Martin DB4 to our beach house in Oxnard, CA. It wasn't lagged down then, and it fell over where the DB4 would have been!! It did nick the corner of my then Ford Taurus SHO, but it would have flattened the aluminum bodied DB4 if it had been there. Sometimes you get lucky. I needed some major rigging from friends to get it back up right. It is well lagged to the house now.

I bet you can buy that tape somewhere. Heat causes it to expand 10X or whatever to create an airtight seal to prevent combustion inside the safe. Even though you like to burn money.

You're luckier than most, Hugh. Maybe because hard work causes good luck.

Yes, I've been lucky and blessed through hard work, and some great opportunities that presented themselves as well, that I was smart enough to seize. I moved to California 37 years ago with NOTHING. I'll be leaving in a few years with at least a few nickels to rub together.
