Sold My Honda Pilot to a Rough Couple

Sold my 2004 Honda Pilot today to a couple in a bad way. I was asking $5000 for it but noticed several on CL of the same vintage and spirit going for high 3s low 4s. I left it up to my Son to handle the deal starting out. He reposted on FB and got a hit. The lady said she would be by with cash, really needed a car because she lost hers. Well, her and her hubby show up. Nice enough couple. He's got plenty of pen ink and she was very pleasant. We talked for a bit. She l0st her car to repo man. He has been out for a little while. Not sure what he was in for - didn't ask. They have a total of 6 kids all under 12. They opened up a hair salon and lost the AC today. The car they rolled up in wasn't even something my Son would buy and that's saying something!

I know when someone is trying to con me, these folks weren't like that as far as I could tell. They gave me cash and I signed over the title. I counted the stack and said they over paid me by $20. She couldn't figure because the pawn shop gave her the money when she pawned her wedding ring but maybe they made a mistake which meant they could order pizza for the kids tonight.

The Honda served us well and frankly there is a part of me that would have let them have the darn thing just because.

The money shall go towards his truck fund. He has put the majority into it and normally I don't give him anything but I decided that he could use that money and all he has made to buy his truck.

So the search is on...

Some times they really arn't lying. It just the other 999 out of a 1000 they are that spoil and numb the majority of the public to helping out.

Glad the deal seemed to be a win-win in this case.

One would think a 2 year old Honda Pilot would bring a high 20s or low 30s on price. Be sure to PM me next time you are selling a car!

Reminds me of the time one late summer when I was in the driveway detailing my pristine, rust-free Triumph Spitfire to sell. I knew I couldn't store it in a climate-controlled building to keep it from rusting. A dedicated Sunday only car to constantly tinker with was no longer in the cards at that time in my life so it had to go, sadly.

So this young college kid comes up earning his way through some Ohio college by selling books or something door to door. He fell in love with the car even before I told him it was for sale.

He asked how much? Thinking it over for a minute, I decided to ask waaay high knowing he didn't have much money and it would be a totally impractical car for him. Well he forced on me a small, non-refundable cash deposit and asked me to hold it for a couple days because he was due a pretty big check for most of his summer's work.

Sure enough he shows up with the dough. We do the deal and he drives off happy as a clam.

A week or so goes by and he calls asking if I know anybody who knows how to work on these cars.

Can't have been in the joint for too long, knocking out 6 kids in 12 years. You need wheels more than a wedding ring, that's for sure. Must have been a hell of a wedding ring to pawn it for several grand. For the average 10k engagement ring, you'll look at $450.

I am always amazed how poor people are once I leave the Bay Area fantasy land - under 100 miles is plenty to get there.

I know there are nice folks out there who are trying. I have to believe that.

George, we are spoiled and don't see much of that around these parts. You are right, get out to the desert over the hill or go out east from here, the difference is huge.

People helped me when I was starting out, and I like to help people when I can, if it seems right, especially if they are trying to turn their lives around.

I had trouble with the $5k pawn for a wedding ring. It would have taken a 3ct solitaire for me to get close to that.

Sounded like she pawned some stuff but not all of the money was from selling her goods.

Some of the cash was probably from renting her goods.

I was at a Walmart in upstate NY not too long ago. I noticed 3 different families calculating what the value of their cart was and overheard 2 of them say "no we can't afford that right now". It was the first time in a long time I had been exposed to that line of thinking. I don't consider myself wealthy and I don't think I live in a particularly wealthy area but I've (luckily) never had to do that. I buy what I want food shopping.

The more I replay that situation in my head the more I kick myself for not buying groceries for those families. Even something as stupid as a bag of Oreos for the kids would have made their day.
