Refractory Panels

Anyone ever make their own ?
The rear panel (21" x 16" x 1-1/2" thick) needs replacing. The fireplace manufacturer Marco, is out of business.
Can't find a replacement panel (cut to fit) in 1-1/2" thickness. Plenty if 1 inchers, none at 1-1/2".

I see refractory cement - is it that easy ?

If you want to buy a replacement & can't find inch & a half, you have to ask if an inch thickness is good enough or maybe buy two & make a double layer of two inches. I'm no expert, but those questions come immediately to mind.

All the panels (back, sides, and bottom) all kinda fit together like a puzzle forming a fairly efficient seal -- so I'm hesitant to mess with the thicknesses both thicker and thinner.

did you see this? a plus, inc. - Marco Fireplace Brick

I replaced a set with generic after finding OEM was impossible or at least hard to find for my unit. I would be worried about excessive heat, especially if a zero clearance installation. Mine were only help in place by sheet metal brackets and screws so simple to mod if required.

Yes, I found them but the trail went cold when it led me into the generic panels and these too were only 1" thick.
Thanks for the feedback since refractory panels are not as sexy or entertaining as most of the PPOT threads but I don't want to burn my house down as I look for a solution what seemed like a simple problem.

I'm thinking I'll need to form and pour my own but there are many, many options and wanted to follow the trail and not to be a pioneer.

Thanks guys...

You can try Raypack boilers. They have a factory in Oxnard California. Maybe you can get a piece of refractory from one of their boilers. One piece may fit the size you are looking for. If the piece is to big it's very easy to cut.
The refractory is very light and easy to work with. Just wear a mask when cutting.

Oxnard is right in my backyard (and right by the beach - a nice day trip).
Thanks for the tip
