This is my issue. The batteries, which contain an organic solvent not too far off from gasoline, are EVERYWHERE in the car.

Yup.

Image a gas tank like this under your ENTIRE passenger compartment.

You are correct, Sir. I apologize for the remark. Read over everything and you are right. No one blaming Tesla.

FWIW, I was "triggered" by the memory of the Carrera GT and the lawsuit against Porsche.

Went off a bit.

Tobra 03-28-2018 01:39 PM

Yes Glen, you are correct. If it were an old woman it would not be as big a deal.

I bet if you asked a hundred 80 year old women if they had a choice between their death in an accident, or a 25 year old in an accident, at least 95 of them would choose their own death over a 25 year old.

Princess Diana died in an S-class. Does that mean that the Mercedes S class has poor accident survivability? There is no car that guarantees occupant survival in a crash, we are only ever talking about playing the odds.

I am not with the NTSB nor do I have the qualifications to determine what conditions are considered beyond what a car should be able to endure but I do know that
-there seems to be a problem with explosion and fire with Teslas AND
-There is a design flaw and Tesla has yet to own any part of the blame on any issue.
Did Elon read Hillary's book or did Hillary read Elon's?

You will note that those who died in that MBz were not wearing their seat belts. The one survivor was.

Also note that the Mercedes hit a cement column at high speed and did not burst into flame.

As far as sedans go, I can not think of a better car to be in than the W140 S-class.

While this guy is purposely puncturing a battery, it is very possible to have this happen in an accident. The "spark" is generated by the battery and the fuel is in the battery.

Tesla shares fall after Moody's downgrades credit rating

Moody's lowered its corporate family rating on Tesla to B3 from B2 and changed the outlook to negative from stable.

"Tesla's ratings reflect the significant shortfall in the production rate of the company's Model 3 electric vehicle," Moody's said in a release.

The price on Tesla's eight-year junk bond, which matures in 2025, fell to its lowest since it was issued in August. It hit 90.8 cents late Tuesday afternoon just ahead of the Moody's announcement, according to IHS Markit.

I'm thinking that whomever gets the last one produced will have quite the collectors item.

Mercedes makes a heck of a safe car.

Lenny Dykstra could not manage did kill his passenger or his own drunken hillbilly ass in his SL.

Diana would very likely have survived just fine if she was wearing a seat belt. And most importantly had a sober driver. She was a poster child for wearing seat belts and not riding in cars driven by drunks.

RANDY P 03-29-2018 06:07 AM

I still remember the photo of Diana someone leaked online when they peeled the top back to get her out. Sitting there, dead.

Sure. Thing is not whether other crashed cars have caught fire, but which ones are more easily carbecues.

Remember when the Tesla drove over a piece of road debris and caught fire? That's a single fault condition that most any gas-tank vehicle would have survived w/o fire, and likely w/o leakage.

red-beard's vid above speaks volumes.

And again, the Musk claim was, at one time, Safest cars ever made... or some such.

red-beard 03-29-2018 07:29 AM

Hey! I wonder if Carbon-Tetrachloride could be used as the solvent for the batteries? Non-flammable!

For some reason the WSJ is reporting today that less than 30% of those invited to take delivery of their Model 3s actually take delivery.

Can't imagine why.......

manbridge 74 03-29-2018 08:24 AM

I believe after the first Tesla underbody was punctured they made it thicker. This is basically a sheet of armour grade steel that runs the length of the vehicle further increasing its tank like weight.

Thing is, as the saying goes, the mountain always wins. Meaning you can’t control all variables in a crash and even if they made it an inch thick it could still be compromised.

Sure, but this below was also caused by a design defect.
