Metallic Hydrogen. This could be very interesting!
Next Big Future: Harvard researchers created solid metallic hydrogen in the lab and studied it - This is already huge but could be fantastic if properties are as predicted
If this material is stable at room temp and is superconductive which is theorized to be then we might be looking at a serious game changer. |
That'd be incredible. Room temperature superconductivity has been the holy grail of material science for years. Let's hope...
|
"If it stays a metal at room temperature and after releasing pressure and was also a superconductor then it would be the holy grail of physics."
Isn't that an incredibly big if? Like, "If pigs had wings..."? |
At room temp and pressure, it will sublime to hydrogen gas. Look at the phase diagram!
100 GPa (giga-Pascals) = 1 Megabar, or 1 million times the pressure at STP! |

I wonder what the implications are for SMH to be used as a fuel in solid form? I can imagine that it's reactivity would be reduced with regard to fuel cell use, but of course that's a guess. Still , a fascinating development.

Again, look at the Phase diagram.

To make it all you need to do is bring a lot of hydrogen together. Like about as much as is in Jupiter.
As a bonus if you can put your hands on even more it will undergo nuclear fusion all on its own. Just have to find a place to put it ;) |
