Well I've tried explaining MST3K to people before, and I end up saying, in frustration, "YOU KNOW, THAT SHOW WITH THE LITTLE SHADOWS IN THE CORNER!" to which people often reply "Ohhhhhh. Yeah that show looks weird. Never actually seen it though."

i first saw MST3k back in 1989 and my "reference standard" was Joel. he always looked stoned or something and it was part of the humour. but Mike is funny too in a different way. i voted for Joel only because i remember first seeing him in some of the most hilarious episodes from the early years.
