Worlds First Menudo Cookoff Championship, July 1973, Raymond Russell Park, San Antonio. Entertainment by Willie Nelson, Leon Russell (and others). Just a small "cookoff event and party" that turned into an unforgettable experience that no one saw coming.
Monster traffic jam along IH10 as an estimated 50,000 people showed up when maybe 5000 were expected. Severe shortage of restrooms, Lone Star (one of the sponsors) had to dispatch special trucks to keep up with the demand for beer. But did Willie and Leon ever put on a show... Next morning the police were still rousting out passed out revelers from the grounds of the cemetary which bordered the park..

I'll never forget being just a few feet from Leon playing piano with Joe Cocker at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1970....Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Amazing show.

A local legend. I often drive by the church he bought years ago to build a recording studio...
A hell of a piano player. Great songwriter. Knew everybody in the business and played with far more of them than most people realize. His solo work was just a small fraction of what he did with his life. They don't make guys like this any more. One I always liked to hear: |

Quote:
I saw him in a small bar with about 150 other people. They held up a black curtain and he apparently came in the back door. When they moved the curtain he was sitting behind his piano and started to play. They played for about an hour. It was so loud I tore off pieces of paper napkins and put them in my ears. He finished his last song and just got up and went out the back door. He never said a word. A friend had one of his albums and wanted to get him to sign it, but by the time we realized the show was over Leon was on the bus.
