Carroll Shelby

Carroll Shelby's name is associated with a chili fixings kit. The kit consists of spices in several packets in a miniature brown paper bag. On the side of the bag is a story related by Shelby about cooking chili during his racing days. On the front of the bag is a depiction of a big western black hat, a trademark piece of clothing for Shelby. He was a founder of the Terlingua International Chili Championship in Terlingua, Texas

Did not know this and somehow this is what my wife is cooling in a crock pot all night for a Chili Lunch cook off tomorrow.

How does it taste?

icemann427 11-12-2016 11:31 PM

Does it taste like...Victory?

Porsche-O-Phile 11-13-2016 02:27 AM

I'm guessing it goes through you fast and leaves skid marks and a burning sensation.

KFC911 11-13-2016 02:42 AM

Let us know how it turns out...bet it's good. I've seen it for years on the shelves, but can't imagine making chili from a kit...

Kit Chili = Kit Cobra :)

Fun...but not the real deal imo...

Have been using it for a few years and the kids and I have not wanted for anything else since finding it...but I would rather own a really nice ERA cobra or GT than an original. SmileWavy

Not sure it is kosher to use a commercial chili mix in a cook off....:D

Shelby's mix makes good chili, to me the secret being to use good meat, i.e. don't use ground hamburger. Good chili grind beef mixed about 2:1 with some ground pork does the trick for me.

and good luck at the cookoff.

Ok, now I have to clean the coffee off my laptop screen...

KNS 11-13-2016 05:37 AM

It's been around for ten, maybe 20 years at least. I've made it a few times - good stuff.

GH85Carrera 11-13-2016 06:19 AM

It is likely ok.

Shelby would endorse anything or put his name on anything that could make him money.

gshase 11-13-2016 07:43 AM

After waiting all night we are very happy with my wife's Cobra Chili. She selected his White chili and used chicken, roasted corn, tequila and lime. No skid marks and there a no rules in the contest an it is a wife's friends......Go Cobra.

It's been around a lot longer than that. I remember my dad would have to buy a bag at Byerlys when we would visit his brother in Minneapolis. This was in the late 70's / early 80's, my dad passed in 85.

I bought a bag last winter just to see if it's like I remember it.
I still like it, but there's better recipes. There's also a lot of bad chili out there.

sammyg2 11-14-2016 05:58 AM

Been using it for years, I go heavy on the cayenne and sriracha and light on the masa.

I usually throw in some sausage and a squirt of maple syrup, just to make it interesting.

The original Cobras were really kits too. That said, I would take a Kirkham over an original or continuation series. Or a JBL if I wanted to go really fast.

Really?? I could have sworn it was a production car with a Ford V8 installed.

Per wikipedia, they started as 4cyl, then went to 6cyl.

I prefer the narrow body that you posted above to the widebody 427 cobra look that is so common.

When Bristol ceased building their 6-cylinder engine in 1961, AC's owner, Charles Hurlock, was approached by Carroll Shelby to use a Ford V8 in the Ace chassis, producing the AC Cobra in 1962.
The various chili kits all seem to be about the same. I've used several. I usually end up getting this one.

We've been eating it for many years. I think it is great, and you can "customize" it to suit your taste.

I believe Shelby sold the chili company many years ago.

It was a production car shipped to Shelby American who modified it to make it the Cobra. Not something that rolled off the line.

Sounds like drunken racist chili if ya ask me...

But you didn't :)

Time for me to make a batch...probably toss in a can of black beans just because I can....
My problem is the peppers, and it never comes out the same way twice....sometimes it gets a bit warm but not by design...but I ain't building kit chili either :).
