What's wrong with this Porsche enthusiast ?

I Nearly Died Racing My Vintage Porsche 911 at La Carrera Panamericana - The Drive

In 1955, the PR effort was deemed a success and the race was shuttered, only to be revived in 1988 by a group of auto enthusiasts. Running such an historical event was a bucket list item, and I bought the perfect car to see my dream to fruition: a 1968 Porsche 911.
...

Buddy and I figured that with Ben calling the shots, we’d be fine to jump in with no training and figure it out as we went.

...
Buddy drove the first day, with Ben calling. They had great synergy, really cranking. There was only one problem, which we quickly discovered. The Pan-Am notes about turns, and degree of difficulties, weren’t consistent, or even right. They were the organizer’s arbitrary interpretation of the road. It’s disconcerting to scream into blind corners with a sheer cliff on the side relying on someone else’s thoughts, so a number of teams had come down early and run the course to get their own notes. We didn’t have that luxury, so we were stuck with their questionable handout.

...
Most of the day’s stages were uphill, and the cars with triple our horsepower were killing me, but our car was still performing well and reliably. That night, Buddy suggested we double up wheel time to keep the good momentum going. That meant I’d be back behind the wheel for day three.

And that’s when bad things started happening.
No ****.

I haven't, and I'm not going to read the story at the link, but it sounds like someone that didn't have a clear understanding jumping in to find that they were in WAY over their head.

TLDR version: driver/team did not pre-run course and create their own pace notes. Relied on 'official' pace notes, which were apparently a bit more subjective than they expected. Went into a corner expecting a 3rd-gear corner and found a 2nd-gear corner, went off the outside, barrel-rolled down the hill.

How much for he REE-UMMs?

sugarwood 11-23-2016 10:35 AM

Reminds me of this.
Is this what they call a decreasing radius turn?
Notice how much braking the lead car does.

I don't understand the thought process.

They don't have any experience. They don't trust the pace notes AND they want to keep up with cars that have more power and those who knew enough to pre-run the course in advance.

Yeah, that was never going to end well.

It would have been wise to run your race and get some experience.

I wonder if he mused about the tires, while casually lighting a cigarette...

Must be nice to plunk down 100k and a trailer, then roll it over the weekend. Sad to hear about his friend Gunther though. Casualties at an event (of any nature) are tough.

Interesting how the side airbag deployed as soon as the roll started, I didn't realise they deployed that early...

Chalk it up as an expensive learning experience. Fact is there's many more out there, have other daytime jobs yet want to fulfill the dream, play racer in the big show. Something that really hasn't changed in all these years. You have the privateer's, gentlemen racers who can afford it.

Take a look at the Daytona 24. Many don't have the level of seat time and yet are mixed in with the pro's. Its mostly buy a ride. Though today things happen much faster! Writer survived, some not so lucky. Oh well.

Whats wrong is that he didn't put up enough hotlinks to his businesses or tell us how easy it was to toss down 130 large on a wrecked car. And he didn't even post one pic of his wife. What a maroon.

Head curtain airbags are worth their weight in gold. I know... I've tested one!

Supersize plus one..... he looked to me like he was driving well, did not scape goat anyone else but his own lack of prep...... took responsibility.

That guy is a total idiot, the camera was even more to the left then his head,
so those right turns were even more blind to him then to the camera..

Is that a closed road?no upcoming traffic?

Bill Douglas 11-24-2016 10:54 AM

A waste of a perfectly good car.

Jim Richards 11-24-2016 12:58 PM

Thread jack: OK, I don't understand that M3 crash video at all. I understand how he crashed, but what a maroon, driving like that on public roads. He goes over the double yellow multiple times--not for fun--but because he can't keep it on his side of the road. He's driving way over his skill level. And then who puts that type of evidence on the Internet? So now the insurance company and the cops can see what negligence went on? And finally, how does the passenger door wind up unscathed after all that?
