Is $400 fair for a 1970s-era Rem 1100 (left hand)

Upstate neighbor in his eighties is slowing way down and offered me one of his shotguns. Told me to make a fair offer. I said I really don't want to pay more than $400, but let me ask around and if the gun's worth more than that I'll let you know so you can sell it to someone else.
Condition wise It seems to have lived a very nice life in his safe.

PS- it has a deer barrel on it. No other barrels come with it

If the gun is in very good condition, $400 is a low ball offer. 12Ga, I presume? You could pay $800 for it and would still have gotten a good deal.

do some research on the internet. Many guns are very price sensitive based on the year manufactured. Winchester model 30, before 1964 for example............

Left hand unit is a more rare model. IF you are a lefty, it will be a great find.

LH guns cost more when you buy them.
LH guns bring less when you sell them.

It'd be close with both barrels, or at least a ribbed one.

Thanks guys. Looked around and nice RH ones with choked shot-barrels are asking $550 and up. What that means for a LH with deer barrel who knows but I'll assume it's the neighborhood. I think I'll tell him it's worth about that. I really like the old coot and he likes me; he seems to want/let me have it... his adult children are out of state and sound like they might vote Democrat. But I can't pretend that I need a semi-auto shotgun- at any price, really. I still have my LH 870 since youth that hasn't seen anything other than novelty use in years. When we shoot, it's centerfire at silhouettes and targets, not shotgun.
