For fans of the 1st gen Miata
Some people just can't leave well enough alone, huh? Pretty cool, actually.

It's funny. The pop up headlights on my '90 Miata are the least appreciated feature from my point of view. I didn't like them on the MR2 nor on the 924S,but on those cars they didn't seem to take up so much of the view when deployed. After four years I am becoming resigned to them, but can't help but dream about a re-skin of the front end which would make the car look like an Alfa TZ1.

Bring back pop ups. They were cool. What would you do with pop ups and all the LED stuff around now.
That was a great car. Really did invoke the elan of Fairlady or MG, and was a drivers car.

It's funny, back when I had mine, I got used to them and preferred them. The only time I really had them up was in the rain or when it was dark. I did convert to some e-codes. I'm not a fan of when folks have the lights rest part way up like the photo above, whether they have converted to the low-pro lights or not. the low-pro lights aren't bad assuming they are well done. I always thought the single round pop-up contributed to the car's character much like the headlights on a 911.

Fun stuff. I like the looks of the early cars with the lights down.

They even designed the exhaust system to sound like the Lotus. |

Mazda actually bought a bunch of old sports cars (even an E-type, IIRC) and drove them all to figure out what characteristics they really liked and then tried to combine them all into one car. It's not a total copy of an Elan.

Obviously... steel body...etc. And the exhaust story is true.
From an article: "... the fact that Tom Matano and the other Mazda designers involved with the first Miata used the Elan as a design brief is common knowledge. A few years ago, when it was announced that Mazda had built and sold over 750,000 units of the Miata/MX-5/Eunos, I had the opportunity to ask Matano how it felt to be “the most successful sports car designer ever”. Chevy may have sold more Corvettes since 1953, but that car has gone through more radical styling changes than the Miata. Though there have been a number of Miata generations, the car’s basic styling language has remained the same. Matano told me that because the Miata was based on the Elan, he was actually prouder of the last RX-7, which was a clean sheet design." Last edited by tcar; 12-02-2016 at 09:31 AM.. |
