What size laptop do you use?

Mulling over a new machine.

What size laptop do you use? 11", 12", 13", 15", 17"?

Why?

Was in the Apple store playing with the 15" MBP . . .

aap1966 12-02-2016 11:21 PM

11 inch MacBook Air.
Brilliant, but I think now out of production.

Bill Douglas 12-02-2016 11:30 PM

17" toshiba with 1080 resolution.

Had a 17 until I spilled wine in the keyboard. Apple had it six months and couldn't fix it. Apple wasn't making a 17" anymore, so I got a new 15" Retina screen macbook pro. I need a big screen because I do a lot of photo work.

15" mbp

15" Macbook pro with Retina screen. With my bad eyes I need a big screen! The desk top computer has a 24" flat screen monitor!

14" Lenovo Carbon X1, 2nd gen.

15' MacBook Pro and a separate monitor. I do a lot of spreadsheets and online meetings so it helps to have two venues.

I also use a separate keyboard

15" Macbook pro.

12" toshiba. Because it was the cheapest one I could find 3 years ago.

15" MacBook Pro w/an old Apple 30" cinema display external monitor, separate hardwired keyboard & multi-button mouse. (I'm an architect & use it for all my plans & 3D modeling etc...)

17" rarely take it anywhere, bought a laptop because I have a small house.

I use it for watching TV as well- originally purchased for doing CAD, so wanted a larger screen.

The best of both worlds if you need to bring it places would be a small screen laptop for easy portability and then dock it at home to a larger monitor.

masraum 12-03-2016 07:34 AM

I've never owned or purchased a laptop, but I've had some that were issued by the companies that I worked for. Those were always 14 or 15". To me, 15" is a pretty good compromise since, not too big, not too small.

My wife has always had laptops, and they have always been 10"-12". She prefers small and light. She did once use a 15 for a short period, but didn't like the size. He current is an 11" Macbook Air that's 2 or 3 years old. She loves it.

David 12-03-2016 07:46 AM

13". My previous was 15" but I prefer the smaller size since I mainly just use it for travel and work at home. For surfing the web at home I usually just use my iPad.

stomachmonkey 12-03-2016 08:14 AM

17's almost exclusively.

Irritated the 17 MacPro is NLA.

island911 12-03-2016 08:16 AM

Surface Pro 2 (10.6 inch Display · 1.98 lb) --the closest thing to a Pocketable PC that can run engineering programs.

portability with free-form sketching ability, and easily docked at home or work to a large, high pixel-count monitor and a multitude of input devices.

RKDinOKC 12-03-2016 08:51 AM

15in with 27in external. Used to insist on a 17 for when mobile, but in 2011 moved to a 15 and don't really miss the larger screen when mobile. But I do go mobile less now. Love being plugged into to the 27inch display at my desk though. Typically jump around between apps and remote into other computers.

I have a 17 Dell and a smaller Lenovo in the garage. The 17 is my fave but both have full QWERTY boards.....a must have.

rusnak 12-03-2016 10:46 AM

I use two MBPs. Both w retina display. The bigger one and the little one. I find the little one goes with me more unless it's important.

JavaBrewer 12-03-2016 11:46 AM

Currently a 15" MBP (mid-2010 model). I was going to update with the latest version but if I'm working from home I have an external monitor/keyboard setup. Thinking now of going with 13" MBP sometime in 2017. Nice to use on airplanes and lugging around airports.

jyl 12-03-2016 11:06 PM

I used to carry a laptop around conferences for 8 hours, so thin and light were all I cared about. Now I'm more stationary when using my laptop, so I'm getting interested in bigger, more powerful machines.

What we really need is a flexible screen that can be unrolled and clipped to the top of a 11" laptop, to give a 24" wide second screen.

^This. I didn't want to dedicate the floor space to a desktop workstation, so I've got a 17" screen Asus for use around the house. When I actually want to go somewhere, I take my Thinkpad with 11" display, as it weighs about 3lbs, gets about 10 hours battery life, and converts to a tablet; the Asus has never left the house.

All that said, if I were actually using my laptop for work while on the go, I'd get something with a 13-14" screen; I can't imagine working on spreadsheets on the Thinkpad like I used to with a screen this small and eyes this old.

For traveling, I use an old 13" MBP I recently put a new HD in. The 15" stays put.

With Time Machine and a travel thumb dive, it works out great...the two machine are pretty much identical.

The 13" is a better travel size. I am on the road two weeks a month.

Ask and ye shall receive.

13" tops. Don't want to lug around anything heavy...

Have a docking station at work with a larger monitor and more ports.

For the home, since we live in a small house, no desktops, but still all 13"...

Ditto. The new ones are almost like the MacBook Airs from a couple of years ago. The solid state HDD helps immensely.

Coming from my 17" MBP it's like going from a pickup truck to a Miata. Way more compact and way better feel. And the 17" MBP for its time was great too.

Exactly. I run the display at 1:1 to get the full 1920x1080 worth of info up, and use readers to enlarge the otherwise tiny text.

I sure would like it if MSFT came out with a similar form factor as the Pro/Pro 2, but with an i7 with better integrated 3D gpu, and even higher pixel density. It's a matter of waiting, I suppose. :-\

Dell Precision 15" for most stuff (basically a desktop replacement), and a Samsung Notebook-9 13" for mobile ops. Both running Win10 Pro.

Each has an excellent 1080p display, SSD drive, i7 CPU, adequate RAM, a pretty decent GPU (especially on the Dell), and a ton of other features. The Samsung is pretty impressive for its size. It's super-thin, and weighs less than two pounds so it travels well. The screen size/form-factor is a good compromise IMO, and is as small as I'd want to go while still retaining a true "laptop" feel. For me, the smaller offerings I've played with just weren't ideal when actually using them. YMMV...

intakexhaust 12-04-2016 02:49 PM

For years was acclimated to a 13" tab/pc combo. Eventually went toast and was planning for a similar size. Ended up going to a 17.3" hd w/ dedicated graphics card. Built in Blu-ray and dvd burner. Cumbersome and a bit heavy for travel but otherwise love it. Often plug in for dual monitor- excellent.

Immediately spoiled in the difference. If and when this one gives up, hopefully yet the larger screen will be avail.

stevej37 12-04-2016 07:42 PM

The more important thing to me is the keyboard size and feel. I've had past laptops that were a pain to type on. Be sure to check that out at the store..if buying.

HardDrive 12-04-2016 08:10 PM

Size doesn't matter. It's all about the key strokes.

rattlsnak 12-04-2016 09:25 PM

I just bought a new HP 15" Envy. Really surprised so many on here are using MBPs.

HP 17" Omen - eyes are not as good as they used to be. :(

There are some really good remote keyboards available...it really helps me to be able to turn and directly face the big monitor, reorient the keyboard and get to work on projects.

I also like to sit father away from the laptop than is practical to use the MBP key board...old eyes:)
