Is it true that going wireless speeds things up?

No, wired is always faster.

Used to be on FIOS so I had matched up / down of 75.

FIOS sold out to Frontier here and the service went to ****.

Had to switch to the local provider Grande.

Download is great but they do not offer upload higher than 20.

I'd take less down for equal up any day but end of day reliability is the critical decider.

I'll look at FIOS again in 6 months to a year.

If they got their poo together I'll go back.

From what I have read the USA has some of the slowest internet speeds of the 1st world. South Korea and Japan have very fast internet. We just don't get to have fast internet without paying a LOT.

With that said I am still amazed on a regular basis. I remember jumping up and down when my dial up speed got "really fast" and I could download a 1 MB file in "only" 12 minutes. Now I see updates that are hundreds of megs and they download in short order. I downloaded a ISO image file of a CD the other day that was over 700 MB and it was down in under a minute.

id10t 12-05-2016 12:37 PM

Just under 80mb/s down and 95mb sec up...

But we are kinda busy here on campus with finals... next week when it is just us peons on campus, it will be higher :)

LOL

I'm in software dev, mostly gaming, remember.

Game builds ain't all that small.

Moving a TB of data in a day is not all that uncommon for me.

65 down 6up on Cox, now I see why the kids complain about some lag issues with online gaming. How can I get better up? Running and Asus 5g router

jyl 12-06-2016 02:16 AM

From iPhone, laying in bed.

Wifi 5 mbps down. LTE 17 mbps down.

My Wi-Fi APs aren't the newest.

How about two cables services at the same address and bonding them together? My router will do this...

RKDinOKC 12-06-2016 09:22 PM

I have a 50/10 cox business connection to get 5 fixed ip addresses...

http://www.speedtest.net/result/5857409264.png

In a pinch I've been able to get away with hotspotting my cell. Have unlimited high speed tethering on my plan. As long as the downtime is just a coupla few hours I can get by.

Thought about just keeping the broadband portion of FIOS along with Grande for redundancy.

The combined cost was approaching a dedicated IP at that point which was attractive as I could bring a bunch of offsite production stuff in house and save some sheckles.

But then I need to invest in better long term backup power infrastructure and stock duplicate hardware or at least a stockpile of hard drives and PSU's.

But I'm still back to one pipe which currently with FIOS is not reliable.

I could just keep off site mirrors running in case of a dropped pipe or power but then why bother bringing anything in house which negates the need for dedicated IP so why even bother with redundant pipes.

Sometimes the slippery slope gets you back to the top of the hill.

You know I can help you with the backup power infrastructure. And if you buy a few solar panels with it, 30% tax credit PLUS accelerated depreciation.

I'd actually looked into it once before.

I was told my budget would get me 4 three legged gerbils, a wheel, and a weeks worth of food.

No warranty whatsoever but they did say they would ship mating pairs which when you think about it was just as good.
