Sad dawg story...

Local person walking a blind Lab when an unleashed small Terrier attacks in the terrier's "space" and a fight ensues. Terrier owner over reacts (imo) and shoots, and kills Lab ....just tragic....I'm a Lab lover from way back.

I've broken up some absolutely vicious dog fights in recent years, if you haven't experienced one, then you don't kmow how you will react...so I won't judge too harshly. Last one was about a month ago....a 90 pounder and a 55 pounder that I was taking care of. I've known both since small pups and though I am absolutely the pack leader over both, they went "off", no warning, and though I dove in the middle of them, I was not gonna stop them. Literally went on for 20 mnutes....thought I was gonna have a dead 55 pounder on my hands . Hooked up a garden hose and drove the smaller dawg away....no quit in either, but no permanent damage thankfully.

No matter what one thinks...the law of the jungle applies...

My border collie is fine with some dogs and not so fine in others. She loves black labs for some reason.

I have had to reach in and haul her out a couple of times. 38 pounds of pure fury...

With border collies, they are very visual and some dogs have a problem with collies giving them the "eye".

Rika, it was tragic all around, the terrier never left it's property, and did not survive the blind Labs response to being attacked....a dog walker, not the female owner had the Lab. Tough call...imo. Both owners were heart broken

seems the terrier ran into the street to attack the lab and the dogfight continued onto the front yard

Did you see the story? I thought it was a local one...I thought they said the Lab was sniffing etc. off the sidewalk in the terriers yard, but it was "news", so I dunno...

While walking my two Airedales they got into it (there was another dog present, and that dog made George angry), I loudly and very forcefully told them to, "STOP" and they both did on a dime. When George ducked his head down he meant business, and Misty was not going to back down for a second. Other than that they always go along..having Misty since a pup (George was a rescue), she had seniority and that was the way it was.

The vicious one I broke up recently were two alpha males....90 lb'er is 8-9 years old and the 3 year old is his son/grandson?, in their fenced back yard over "the one" tennis ball out of several. They've always been together, and I've had total control over both since they were weeks old...not that day . I'd get 'em apart, and the 55 lb'er would reengage...
I was pleading wih the larger one not to kill him, blood was everywhere, I was at a loss, then spotted the disconnected hose. I do not ever want that experience again....

The only real dog fight I have seen (other than to set pack order) is when our lab intercepted me being attacked at our mailbox. She let the other do go immediately when I told her too, but it was too late for the other dog. There was no other people around, but I think it was the people down the street that let their dog run loose all the time.

I have a blind lab. Adopted her 1 1/2 years ago, she's almost 14. Doing physically really well for her age. I have to be real careful with her around other dogs. She can get pretty aggressive. I think with the blindness she's a bit on the defensive all of the time. She's been blind for several years. She reacts strongly to other dogs based on their smell. We can be across the street or down the block. Some dogs get her going, others not at all. She lives very peacefully with our other dog and two cats.

You are a good man. My last Lab was totally deaf by 12, but it was unnoticed by anyone but me as she compensated well and adapted. Bad hips too....I carried her up and down steps her last 18 months but she was still young at heart. When it was her time, I had a vet friend come over and I took her over the bridge in my arms. 14 is a good run...be well and give her an extra treat for KC tonight .

Broke up a few dog fights at the park.
Broke up several more which would have turned into brawls within a few moments more.
Whistle distraction. Come here! HEY loud human command voice. Go over and get between them.
Hey owners, could you come get your dogs please.
This is supposed to be a happy place.

Many people don't understand dog language.
If a nervous-by-nature dog is being followed/hounded/surrounded by a pack, no breathing room, then pinned against a fence, teeth barred..yeah there is gonna be bloodshed.

The trick is to never let it ramp up that far between two animals.
Give 'em a time out when they get too focused.
Or distract with a better things to think about.

I've always had a way with critters....people, not so much . I've learned something new in recent years....sometimes it goes from peaceful to all out war with no warning ...particularly with one breed that has it bred into them . If you've never seen it, trust me, you don't want to....(and no fault of the owners either....it just is ). I would never own one....the 55 lb'er is a mix....his mother and several siblings have been put down....sad, sad, sad. The mother was a "crackhead's" dawg that my friends' son rescued/took from outside a convenience store probably 5-6 years ago at just a few weeks old....was around that lovable pup her whole life too....great, around people but bred to fight....I would never own one, and my buddy delayed the obvious "necessity" for years...he can handle/read dogs too, but I have "the gift"...have since I was a small child.

What irks me is dog walkers on their cell phones. What the hell is so important you have to yak with another dumb human when you're out with your faithful companion?

Dumb humans......they don't deserve a dog's devotion......that's for damn sure.....

I'm with you on this one, Baz.
Too many humans have dogs as a commodity...just something to have in their life rather than understanding that dogs have a personage.
Pisses me off to read stories like this.
.
Oh, I read years ago that some big male dogs can be fearful and then aggressive towards small dogs because the big dogs fear for their gonads being at the level of the small dogs' jaws/teeth.

I have had one of my Shepards snap. Tried the hose, and physically separate her. I was the next target in her mind and I put her down...
I have talked to dog trainers that do retriever training. Those guys have stories.

You did the right thing as tough as I know it was for you. I've got a few scars from breaking them up, but they were not intentional...I love dawgs, but if one snaps and turns on me, they're done. Just got back from my rural property....saw a beautiful GSD trotting down the middle of a 45 mph, rural, busy country road. I stopped my truck, grabbed some treats, and tried my best...had a collar on but avoided me, and three others who also stopped...did change directions and headed back....we all gave it our best shot ...I just hope....beautiful dawg....

Baz....I've put in a request for a Heeler out of next years litter....I've become attached, and look after a tennant's two Blue ones....gets 'em from a relative who's a breeder....great dawgs....mine will be red....hopefully I am worthy ....

Years ago, girlfriend was out walking their family's shih tzu. An unleashed rottweiler walked up, no barking, not aggressive. Looked around a bit, then grabbed the shih tzu in its jaws and killed it. Trotted away like nothing happened. Never fun having a sobbing girl fall asleep in your arms.
