My daughters artwork - some car based..

Hi Guys, just thought I would post a couple of samples of my daughters artwork. She produced this homage to Fast and Furious actor Paul Walker. Also, she likes Lambos and McLarens :). She would like to pursue a career in graphic novel art, what do you think?

Here is a Superman image too:

Wow!! She is an awesome artist!

Amail 12-08-2016 08:39 AM

She should pursue it - she's good! Does she have an Instagram account?

kach22i 12-08-2016 08:39 AM

At some point is a hand, a pen and perhaps a paintbrush involved, or is this all done on computer?

Looks great either way.

stevej37 12-08-2016 08:46 AM

Very nice work!!

Rickysa 12-08-2016 09:15 AM

umm....full body of the chick? SmileWavy (in the cartoon of course!!)

john70t 12-08-2016 09:22 AM

She is already a pro.
Exceptional work!

WOW, very impressive, she should follow her dreams. I expect with her talent she will be very successful.

berettafan 12-09-2016 02:36 AM

So are those photos that get tweaked in software to look like drawings?

Really good work, the eyes just draw you in.
Strong talent, hope she find an opportunity to continue with her remarkable creations.

Cheers Richard

Hi, she uses a graphics tablet to draw her images in the same way you would with a pencil, pen or brush. Once the image is in the computer she can then start to work on the colours (colors :)) and textures. However, she can draw too - it is what she studied at college.

Thanks for the compliment!

No, definitely not. She draws every single component of her work. She wouldn't have it any other way :). She might use a photo for reference - but then you would need too when trying to get a close likeness, but the photo is never imported and 'tweaked'.

What I like about that method (never done it myself) is that the colors look like transparent film but with a watercolor character.

If I were try to get that same character with watercolor or gouache, I would run into paper texture issues, chroma issues and then have it fail me upon scanning which washes out any intended intensity and screws up the delicate thin parts as well.

I do things by hand, but have a cell phone with a pen/stylus to sketch out ideas quickly. I don't take advantage of 90% of it's features. Some people do convincing work just on their cell phones, it's amazing what can be done these days.

Looks great, hope she finds her path in life. One that pays enough to live on.

Oh WOW! Seriously, WOW!!!!!

Is it possible to purchase a copy of the Paul Walker tribute? Not sure what format it is, etc. But I know a young man who would really love that for Christmas.

Outstanding. Shows some range in abilities between the Walker panels and the Manga Seinen style of Superman...

Steve Carlton 12-09-2016 07:52 AM

Fantastic work. She's got all the talent before she even starts in the career, IMO!

well i'm no artist but this is some of the most amazing talent I've seen shared here on Pelican.

as Rika said, 'oh my'. you click on this thread thinking 'i'm sure i'll find some positives to note' and then you see the work....wow.

berettafan 12-09-2016 08:35 AM

in todays world i wonder what's the best route to leverage skills like that? surely some publishing house would hire her but does that put your talents under their umbrella or are you free to pursue side work like blogs and such.

unclebilly 12-09-2016 11:01 AM

Just plain awesome!

Brando 12-09-2016 12:26 PM

Some darn nice artwork. Image, Dark Horse, Omni... Plenty of places looking for artists. Or, self-published?

rhett 12-09-2016 01:14 PM

Hi Guys, well..thanks so much for all the great compliments that you have given my daughter, she is really so pleased that you like her work. She kinda doubts herself, but I can see (and so can others) that she has a talent. Reading your comments has really made her day...:D:D.

So, she gave me a few more pieces, see what you think. She has an idea for a graphic novel bubbling around at the moment, story and characters established, front page done, here it is:

Here is a page of content:

Here are a couple of further homages to well known characters:

Here is a bit of earlier work to try out some techniques:

And here is one for the guys! ;) - she was going to do an entire deck!

Thanks for looking, your comments and advice!:)

Amail 12-09-2016 01:18 PM

You should ask her to revamp your avatar!

Hugh R 12-09-2016 01:26 PM

You said she studied in college, so maybe mid-20's? Tell her to apply to Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilms/Pixar, we own them all. Also if she needs more pedigree for post graduate work, tell her to look at Cal/Arts in Valencia, CA founded by Walt Disney.

pete3799 12-09-2016 01:53 PM

Serious talent there.

aap1966 12-09-2016 01:59 PM

Now that's good.

Real good.

Hi Hugh, thanks for that, but we are over the pond in the UK! :(. The comic art scene over here is a bit different to the USA. Not as many opportunities..

brianvb 12-14-2016 01:22 PM

Can you ask her to finish the deck ???

The internet and telecommunications is global.
Art is in everything.
That is top-rate artwork.

There is definitely a market somewhere awaiting.

cashflyer 12-14-2016 01:48 PM

I suppose her homage to Paul Walker is slightly better than mine....

Exactly what I was going to post!

Laneco 12-15-2016 07:18 AM

Simply fantastic! I am VERY impressed!

BlueSkyJaunte 12-15-2016 07:56 AM

Your daughter is extremely talented.

I would read anything she chose to publish--put me on the list!

One thing I have noticed in the webcomic world is that there are a lot of folks with great writing/ideas but lack the artistic skill to bring their ideas to life. They end up teaming with an artist. Maybe this is something she could consider?

She's an incredible artist! My drawings are stick figures.
