RIP Johnny Hockey

Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother were killed last night by a drunk driver while cycling. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Very sad for the family.
Them being home for their sister's wedding.
I cannot image how devastating it must be.

What a horrific thing for the family and his teammates.

And WtF does this mean?

According to police, the Gaudreau brothers were cycling on a road when a man driving in the same direction attempted to pass two other vehicles and struck them from behind. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The (allegedly) drunk guy tried to pass on the right???

From the article this looks to be correct.
I would suspect that the driver thought the SUV was blocking him from passing and his impulse was to pass that vehicle on the right, striking the cyclist from behind.

Just read that Matthew Gaudreau's wife is expecting their first child.
Unimaginable impact on all the families.

Higgins was driving fast (speeding?) and tried to pass the two vehicles in front of him that were moving too slowly for him. He got by one, but the second pulled toward the center of the road to yield to the bicyclists as required by state law. (By the way, this means the bikes were clearly visible.) Higgins thought the second car was trying to block him, so he cut back in to pass it on the right, plowing into the brothers.

Reportedly, the road they were cycling was the road that their parents house was on.

I can't get this accident out of my mind because of the blatant stupidity of the drunk driver of a large SUV (Jeep Grand Cherokee). A familiar thing - unfortunately we all have seen impatient drivers do very stupid things. But likely mostly I can't get it out of my head because the depths of the multi-faceted tragedy.

Interestingly, NJ law regarding vehicular homicide was revised in the last few years to expand the penalties and make them more severe. https://law.justia.com/codes/new-jersey/title-2c/section-2c-11-5/

I now am having second thoughts about ever riding the vintage road bike I am currently restoring (1981 Nishiki International) or any of my other road bikes. I stopped riding motorcycles some years back because of near accidents with inattentive and/or distracted SUV drivers, now I wonder about giving up bicycles as well.

I am not much of a hockey fan, but these kinds of accidents make me sick.

WTF did Mr. Higgins just not wait until it was safe to pass or just plain be patient? Was he racing to save a life, stop a building from burning or was he just an impatient **** who did not have the self control to wait?

And how about the other drivers, were they at least maintaining the speed limit, giving some spacing between themselves to allow faster traffic to pass in relative safety? Or were they cruising along at 20km under the limit and serving as a mobile roadblock?

And alcohol....WTF are we doing when anybody gets on the road anywhere near the legal limit? It just removes our judgement, timing, self control ......just don't.

So sad, but unfortunately repeated even amongst non-celebrities....I pray their family can get over this in time and that Mr. Higgins is found guilty of murder, particularly if he was inebriated.....no different than shooting the players in the head.

D.

My friend was in a head on collision in South Carolina last year. Drunk driver, going the wrong way on the Interstate. My friend's pregnant daughter was killed, my friend was in I.C. for three months, she is till recovering and unable to work.

The drunk was killed in a very grizzly manner. Not grizzly enough for me, and too fast for my liking, but that's what they deserve. The drunk had no valid license and three previous DWI convictions...

4 teens from this small town were killed by a drunk "undocumented immigrant" driver...a wrong lane head on thing.

The T shirt oracle proven right all too often. Caca happens.

I blame the courts for not putting the drunk in jail for a long time. I feel the same way about illegal aliens who keep getting out only to commit more (and sometimes more horrific) crimes. The bleeding heart liberal justice system killed your friend's daughter.
