GoPro

i was at a store yesterday, and i saw it.. HERO 5..FIVE!?

i swear my 3 still has that new car smell. i'm not getting a five. if my 3 taught me anything, it taught me my life is not exciting enough to film. my 3 is fine.

fess up..who got a five? and does it kickass?

flatbutt 12-28-2016 07:47 AM

I am with you....my 3 is fine. Heck I only got an iPhone 6 because the 5 was getting wonky.

billybek 12-28-2016 07:53 AM

Can't remember if mine is a 4 or a 5.
I honestly haven't played with it enough to be able to test the abilities of the camera and the editing software.
Here is a short YouTube vid from last winter. My neighbor is skiing with the camera, I am the guy skiing in front. Camera is on the chest harness mount and the video is unedited except for length and configured for YouTube. It is amazing quality when it you play direct from the memory card to an hd tv.

wildthing 12-28-2016 08:58 AM

This is why they are struggling.

I got a five from the missus. Use it for work mostly. But is has some cool features.
Bought a bunch of mounts on eBay and i plan on using it in my 911 as well.
I am not an expert camera man though so it will take some time and editing before I produce something I like looking at.

Geronimo '74 12-28-2016 09:28 AM

The gps and g force overlays in the movies look kinda cool.
New Quick software requires 64bit version of Windows.

Chocaholic 12-28-2016 09:31 AM

Wife bought me one for Christmas. Said I could record motorcycle rides. What???

If I want to watch a ride, I'll go for a ride.

Returned unopened. Can't imagine what I'd use it for. But I gave her a heart-felt thank-you.

I used mine at the track for a long time. I actually believe that watching other people drive -- repeatedly, in detail -- helped me smooth out my own style and get better at hitting track points. I also carry it diving, though my dive videos are thus far pretty mediocre. Still, it's nice to be able to come back with *something* to show for all that time underwater. It's also handy for time lapse -- I don't mind leaving it out in awful weather to catch a sequence that I wouldn't put a real camera out for.

(shrug) Is it worth getting The Latest? I seriously doubt it. Well, unless you're awesome, which I am not. :(

Geronimo '74 12-28-2016 01:34 PM

I'm not awesome either, but it didn't make sense buying an older model.
Gopros make pretty good pictures too, it's not just for filming, just saying.

I have a Hero 3 that I never used sitting in a box....if anyone wants to come by in Orange County and take it off my hands, cheap....PM me.

The only thing worth filming is with my Garmin dash cam.

ted 12-28-2016 05:54 PM

my hero 3 has kept working for years, but only 720hd.
it works so why not use it...

a Sessions HD camera might be my next.

rattlsnak 12-28-2016 06:16 PM

I have a Hero 4 and use it maybe 8-9 times a year. I have some great flying videos like the one below, but also, I have a helmet mount for snow skiing, motocross and my race car and I have some really cool videos from all of those activities! I videoed my Grand Canyon Helo tour also which is fun to watch again. It takes some planning to use, but I'm glad i have it.

I got a hero 4 for Christmas last year. I've struggled to find a use for it. I put it on the selfie stick and took some video of the fish in my pond, but that's about it so far.

Hopefully I'll get my car together and do some DEs this year and get some video. What is the PCA policy on GoPros in cars. What mounts are acceptable?

Geronimo '74 12-29-2016 12:58 AM

Gopro Hero 5 can record in 4K, no way my laptop can manage those files for editing.
I record in 1080, 50 frames/sec.

cashflyer 12-29-2016 04:20 AM

I bought a GoPro HERO5 Session back in August so that I could video my airplane. It is a relatively new construction airplane, and used the video to check things that I cannot see in flight; checking aileron stability during maneuvers, checking fabric covering for bubbles in various attitudes, etc. After that, I used the videos to critique my maneuvers (they suck).

Maybe one day I will be narcissistic enough to film myself for the sole purpose of internet glory.

Isn't that the whole point? :D

When my wife game me the GoPro she said I could use the forehead mount and use it to video taking my engine apart so I would know how to put it back together (no faith in me!).
Watching a video taken close-up without careful camera control makes me nauseous.

I ditched all my GoPros for a Virb Elite. It has a nice on/off rocker switch that's easy to reach when the camera is mounted on top of my helmet.
