BPH/OTC meds warning. DON'T DO THIS
If you are a man of a certain age you probably have some degree of enlarged prostate. If you have it, be aware some over the counter drugs can make it much worse. Ask me how I know.
I go along without any symptoms most of the time, but periodically it is a little hard to pee for a few hours - weak stream, frequently have to pee, etc. Tuesday I came down with a cold and took some Nyquil. By Wednesday I could not pee. Went to the bathroom every 20 minutes and dribbled out an ounce or so. I was about to explode and seriously thought I was going to have to go to the ER and get drained. The only changes in my lifestyle had been drinking a lot of diluted grapefruit juice, eating hot spicy food exclusively, and Nyquil. I looked on line, Googled "cold prostate" and bingo, warnings all over the place. The drugs in Nyquil and a lot of other old school cold meds can enlarge your prostate. Fortunately it is only temporary and after 6 hours without the drug I was pissing like a 20 year old. They say newer "2nd and 3rd" generation cold meds don't do this. I'm trying Claritin right now. |
Saw Palmetto.
Seriously, if you are not taking it you are nuts. If you want to make it simple just get this. https://www.amazon.com/TruNature-Prostate-Health-Complex-Palmetto/dp/B00F1MB79K While at my annual check up last year I mentioned to the doc that I was not peeing like a 20 year old anymore. Not difficulty but starting / stopping and generally something I had to "think about". He recommended it so I tried it and the **** works. Makes "other" activities better as well. ;):D |
Even when I was 20 I could not pee like a race horse. As I get older I am a lot more aware of changes in my body but of course most of the time they are gradual. As in six months before I had a turp operation(trans urethral resection of the prostate) I ignored the warnings. Six months later I was in acute distress the day after my daughter's wedding in Ireland. A catheter was installed and had the turp shortly after.
I stay away from meds as much as possible. An enlarged prostate is not a fun thing. Can be confused with prostate cancer and regular digital examinations are necessary. The turp op was the best thing I ever had. Be aware of what your body is telling you. |

FWIW: Engaging in sexual activity helps a lot. (2 to 3 times a week)
But the best thing you can do is drop some weight and exercise every day. Nothing too ridiculous. Just 30 minutes of walking daily can make a real difference. |

As a married neighbor said to me, " sex where do you get that?" |

Several years ago at a large banquet I had the need to visit the bathroom. There was a man in at least his 70s and maybe 80 moving slowly towards a urinal. I waited a few moments to see which one he was going to pick so I could pick the urinal with an open space in between. You guys know the etiquette. Anyway he was unzipped and waiting for the flow. I unzipped and started to pee and some 10 year old boy came RUNNING in and unzipped and within milliseconds was whizzing and was done in 15 seconds and off to the sinks. I had a couple of beers to get rid of so I was still in mid stream. As the kid left the bathroom the old man looked at the kid and said "show off."
That kid had zero prostate problems and a bladder the size of an orange. |
