What to do in rainy San Francisco

I'm here with the wife and our two college aged kids for a few days but rain is in the forecast for our duration. We did pier 39, fishermans wharf , crissy park, the prisidio, cable cars and 12 mines on foot today. We are resting our weary bodies for dinner tonight and trying to get a game plan together for the remainder of our time here until we head to Carmel Sunday. Please help!!!

Id make a reservation at the Tonga Room, hit up Amoeba records, grab a bourbon at the Big 4 bar and then another drink at Top of the Mark.

Big 4 for drinks for sure, Frascati on Russian Hill for dinner at a great neighborhood spot (ride the cable car to Green St), Coit Tower, Cliff House, MOMA

Don't miss the Alcatraz tour...get your tickets early. Check out the Musee Mecanique and tour the WWII submarine, USS Pampanito...both down near Fisherman's Wharf. If you've already ridden the Cable Cars, check out The Cable Car Museum for a behind-the-scenes look at how it all works. Head up to Twin Peaks for a fantastic 360° view of the City. Have a drink at the Top of the Mark on Nob Hill. The Disney Museum in the Presideo is pretty cool. It's not just about Disneyland, but more about Walt's life & career. For a little culture, check out the DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park. The Exploritorium is big fun for kids of all ages. Don't let the rain stop you from getting out and doing things...just bundle up and enjoy yourselves. Sunday is supposed to be the wettest day of the upcoming week.

When you're in Carmel, be sure to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium right next door on Monterey's Cannery Row.

Sounds like everyone's voting to head south towards LA. To get out of the rain and maybe warm up. Suggestions for what part of LA, where to stay and what to do in 3,2,1...

The musee mecanique is my only reason for going into the wharf - though I do like stopping by Scomas for a pre-musee cocktail. There's something charming and reminiscent of my early '80s youth there at Scomas.

The Tonga Room is easier to get into - but huge and kind of bland. If you're a small group and maybe willing to wait head to Smugglers Cove on Gough(?). Tiny place but super hardcore tiki. The whole place might accommodate 80 and they do keep count with a line at the door. It's worth the hassle...

+1 on stay in SF and hit the museums... I believe there are a bunch congregated in Golden Gate park?

I would vote against LA (and I live here) it is mostly an outdoor city and it is drizzling here, not to mention you will lose a whole day driving down.

Or drive down to the central coast, stay in Cambria and do the Hearst Castle.

Exploratorium is cool and is indoors, only open a few more hours though.

No way you get Alcatraz tickets on this short of notice.


Liable to be raining solid all day tomorrow. Driving down to Hearst's Castle would be a drag on a day like this. Pacific Cafe on Geary is good and reasonably priced. Nice they give you a glass of wine while you wait, but waiting outside in the rain wouls suck more than somewhat.

Sparkly city lights menagerie, 270+deg view, hear echos from every corner of the city way down below.

Have a sunset dinner at the Cliff House overlooking the ocean, at the end of GGPark.

Wow, dodged that bullet and glad we left. We ended up in marina del Rey at the Marriott there. I see why it's so crowed here! The weather is fantastic, the site seeing and people watching is endless and if you like sports cars they're everywhere.
We walked down Venice Beach to Santa Monica Pier the first night and had dinner across from the pier. When then did the hop on hop off bus the next day which took us past Hollywood stars houses, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Sunset strip, the farmers market and countless other stops. We went back by ourselves to the Beverly Hills area to do some mansion viewing and then got caught in the Golden Globe Awards traffic. Day three took us to Universal studios which lasted most of the day but we stopped on Hollywood Blvd. to grab some goodies and a glimps of Ben Aflack, who was at the Chinese Theater for the premiere of his new movie. Back to San Francisco tomorrow and maybe Muir Woods and then home. Totally jealous of everyone that calls this area home!

Cool, nice to know you guys are having a great time here and you actually like this place. Stay dry in Muir Woods. We are not custom to this kind of wetness.
Sausalito and Tiburon are both nice places to stop and have a meal (Sausalito) if you are heading up to Muri Woods. If you have more time (assuming you have a vehicle) I suggest drive a couple of hours and get out to the wine country, Napa or Calistoga. Nice and relax and no rush.

What to do in rainy San Francisco:

1) invite two strangers into your house.

2) tell all the men in the city they can't have sex with the strangers.

3) offer them your daughter instead.

3) leave the city and don't look back.

been a long time since the mere mentioning of SF will bring up responses like this. phew..restored my lack of faith in humanity.
