Cleans up easily and it's durable

This looks to be the easiest way. Perhaps have a section of the space with this covering for tasks that risk damage and/or drips and spills?

Would an ACRYLIC SEALER work? It would be very inexpensive ...

Thinking 1/4" would do the trick - but the thicker you go the better protection and wear and tear you get.

I have had 1/4" plywood on the floor of my landscape trailer (over the old 1" x 6''s) for about 2 years now and it has lasted pretty good --- and it stays outside too.

That would get expensive. It's around 4K sq.ft.

I only need to protect a corner large enough to do a heart/lung transplant on a PU truck w/o getting any blood on the floor. ;)

Most livestock chains carry stall mat in 4x8 sheets. It varies from 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick for $30 to $50 a sheet. Heavy as hell. Tough enough for horses with iron shod hooves to pound on it.

When you are done with it, drag it outside, hose it off, put it on craigslist in the Farm section for half what you paid for it. Should be gone in a couple of days.

This is similar to what a lot of gyms use on the floor around the weight machines.

OK I didn't realize the area was so wide....maybe just lay down a few sheets then. The 1/4" stuff is pretty light and easy to move by yourself, unlike the thicker sheets of plywood.

To keep it in place....lay it against one corner, which takes care of 2 of the 4 sides....then you could always use some strips of velcro on the bottom along the edges of the other 2 sides with some sort of adhesive that is removable or just shoot a few tap cons into the concrete and patch up those few spots when done.

That's an idea, is it "rubbery", though?

Thanks. I actually have quite a bit of 1/4" sheets laying around. They are the nice stuff, though, so may not want to use those for flooring.

Thanks for all the help! SmileWavy

I covered a 10' x 20' footprint in my Nomad Garage. With a couple big pieces of carpet, then got used area rugs to place for jobs..
I have the engine out now for a few fixes.
I Used ply under the rear for the Jack to roll on the carpet better.
All for less than a hundred dollars. Makes for a nice surface to work on.

I did put a thick sheet of poly under to resist ground moisture.
That could be good insurance for your shop. The carpet still lays flat over the poly.

You could do the same, without the tent. 10'x 20' creates a nice one car work space.

Nice to see your Airstream indoors and close to you.

Cheers Richard

A couple of pieces of 3/8" ply for the Jack kept it moving easily. One long piece would be better.

Not only is it more comfortable to work from, it can define a space in the big open area like you have.

10' x 20' is just big enough to work on the engine right behind the car.

The one dark area rug is catching most of grit, and will probably be replaced after this job. It cost me $10.

Richard, you're not using one of Tabs' Persian carpets as a floor protector are you?

tevake 01-10-2017 02:38 PM

Likely similar source.
Just not as discerningly selected to be sure.

I have muttered a few prayers while kneeling on it however.

Cheers Richard

More options

The rubber stall mats is a great idea. Here's a couple more:

Interlocking basement tiles - plywood top with rubber or polymer grooved bottom that lock together. Not cheap, but would provide a great rolling/jack surface. Put a sheet of poly underneath.

Herculite material - we use it for containment tents as it is a heavy, PVC impregnated cloth that stands up to very high traffic and abuse. Probably can only be obtained from a tent fabricator. There are numerous weights and surface treatments.

Why not use a heavy reinforced tarp, cheap from HF or the like. I would concerned with that or similar materials sliding around and creating a slip hazard. You may be able to use some double backed carpet tape (if allowed) to hold everything in place.

You can usually find used carpet squares on Cl relatively cheap, or just go to lowes and buy some of that green outdoor carpet.
