They estimate it at about 1000 yr old tree. Hard to imagine that when Columbus first sailed to America, the tree was already 500 yrs old!

I remember when I was young and the subject came up about certain celebrity deaths - Harpo Marx, Alan Ladd, Nat King Cole, Walt Disney, Montgomery Clift, etc., etc....

Although I somewhat appreciated the gravity of the situation, I always thought this was something that meant more to my parents than me.

But in the back of my head....I also knew at some point it would catch up to me - and others of my generation.

Well, it has.

Not only "celebrity" deaths but classmates and close friends of mine. There is no more elephant in the room. We are finally coming face to face with the grim reaper.

Sorry to sound so negative. I really don't carry this around with me day in and day out. But once in a while when a death happens....you can't help but feel an attachment to that which left the earth.

It is correct, without the big hole in it, it would still stand. But then, it probably wasn't 'famous', it'd only be another big tree. As you can probably guess, no new trees are cut to drive through these days ... all of them are "sins" from long time ago. The ones in the national parks are closed to vehicles, but the privately owned ones like the chandelier tree I posted, still are open to traffic.

My truck / camper didn't fit through the chandelier tree, but we still got a kick out of it last summer.

the whole of Sequoias may not have been appreciated, treasured, preserved.

Thank you! Shame the tree fell but if you are willing to hike a mile or two into the Sequoia's you will see trees that make that one look like a twig.
