Love snowy hunts

Birds just don't see as well in the snow. Managed 5 total. Saw state highway plow in the ditch on the way home.

Guns froze up a bit. Snowed heavy enough to be impossible to keep it off and barrels actually had ice all over. Made the hole you see out front and it was just the ticket.

This was the entire spread. Had to brush snow off decoys every so often. Birds came in perfectly. Shot well today. Been a lousy season otherwise.

Went again this morning. Literally used sledgehammer to bust ice at the ramp. Entire river was ice. 1.5" thick at ramp but about 3/4" in the middle. Shoulda killed 10 or so but only came home with two. Didn't even have my gun out when first two groups flew in as I was brushing up the boat.

Was told it hit 0 degrees this morning. Kinda scary buzzing along in a 16' John boat busting ice hoping you don't hit a really thick section and just skitter across the top. The boat busts ice as it climbs up on it then falls through. Repeat over and over again.

Going again tomorrow am supposed to be a balmy 22.

Last hunt bagged black ducks and woodies. Looking to get mallards in the am.

It's been years since I saw ice that wasn't in a glass or a cooler.

Used to be tough. Long time ago. what happened?

Nice! A friend has a smoker and wraps chunks of goose breast with bacon then puts each piece on a a stick and into the smoker. Mmm mm good.

We went for the first time two years ago. The meat is fantastic - most guys don't want them so I take them.

The geese are falling out of the sky outside my office window this week (I have a panoramic view of that cornfield).
