Buenos Aires Argentina Inside Tips Or Attractions

I will be staying in Buenos Aires Argentina 3 days early April on the way to a hunting Lodge and on the return trip back to the US.

I would guess the Pelican Trust may have some tips on what to do and see and where to eat. We are Staying at the Recoleta Grand Hotel in the Recoleta area with out a car.

I have read several guide books but would like some tips if you have any. I will be with a group of 50+YO men 6 of us, that are well traveled and like adventure but new to Argentina.

Wow... well for starters, 3 days will barely scratch the surface of that city. With this in mind, I can offer some suggestions that, while not the best, shouldn't have you farting around in remote parts of the city:

Spend an evening or two in Puerto Madero. It's easy to get to, and offers a bunch of great restaurants:

El Mirasol or Las Lilas for steaks, but there's lots of other great options.

I'll get back with more when I get the chance...

Sounds like a great trip, Evan. I'm glad thementat has some suggestions. I spent a week there last year and was pretty happy to get out and on to our next destination. 3 days should be perfect.

I spent 3 days there last month. I wasn't that impressed with BA. I guess the thing that most impressed me were the illegal houses built on the railway land next to the motorway. Some of them were 3 and 4 stories high with satellite TV but they looked like they could topple any moment! I'll post pics tomorrow.

I never felt safe in BA. Leave your expensive watch in the hotel safe and watch out for petty theft.

There is the San Telmo market that is worth a visit (once). The cemetery near where you are staying is very interesting. Everyone hunts out Eva Peron's grave but that is among the least impressive visually. Just get lost in the small alleys and look through the cracked doors and glass panes at the rows of coffins inside each tomb.

You have to try an Argentinian steak at least once made their traditional way. Look for the words "asado" or "parilla" on the restaurant or just follow the smoky smell of flame grilled goodness. The beer is very good, I enjoyed Cristal by the litre.

If you are purchasing something of value always ask the price in US dollars which will be cheaper than the listed Peso price equivalent.

Argentina is well known for leather goods (jackets, shoes, belts, cow hides, saddles if that's your thing) and metalwork such as knives.

Get out of BA into the countryside and then Argentina becomes amazing! The most amazing area for me was Rafaela in the Santa Fe province. Really unspoilt and very European in feel.

We stopped for a couple of days in BA on the way to a Patagonia trip.
Take the hop on hop off to get an idea of the many city neighborhoods.
Take cash (from US) you can leverage almost half off the official rate.
You can day trip tgo Uraguay or Igauzu Falls
And definitely spend and afternoon at La Boca an old neighborhood transformed into a Tango mecca.

After arriving in BA, head straight to Florida Street and find a cambio, cambio, cambio guy to exchange dollars. They are everywhere. Be discreet. Crisp $100 bills are the best and will get you 2x the official rate. BA is not a cheap city, so the improved exchange rate will help big time. You'll have to exchange US dollars when arriving at the airport, which will mean your taxi ride into the city will be relatively pricey. I think we used the official taxi stand right when you exit customs.

The Recoleta neighborhood is nice, and you have access to the cemetery, which is good for a couple of hours.

There's a famous restaurant with a crazy line out the front always. Forgot the name. Its completely over-rated.

The subways are notorious for pickpockets, but we found that the city overall was very safe. We walked all over during our week and never felt unsafe. Its 100x safer than some other cities in S America, such as Santiago, Rio, Sao Paulo, etc.

Hey Evan... Also, my neighbor went on a big game hunting trip out of BA a couple years ago. His trophies were stuck somewhere, maybe customs, for nearly a year, but he did end up getting them. Let me know if you have any hunting related questions and I'll pass them by him.

Wow Fantastic Info folks ! Keep the tips coming.

Vash - Nothing heavy duty just some Dove shooting out side Cordoba with a lodge. This lodge is noted for it's food and atmosphere I have always had it on the bucket list.

Motion-Great advise I will not be bringing any critters back. But would like to get the most out of my US Currency.

They sent me these should be fun.

This was in the program.

Cordoba is considered the dove
shooting capital of the world. The
100 square mile radius (160 km) around
the lodge is annually inhabited by over
40.000.000 million doves. The lodge
enjoys 75 shooting fields all within a
scenic drive through the region’s rich
farmland.

Each day the lodge donates hundreds of
doves to Mission Esperanza Foundation.
We feed 800 children per day and have
already built 3 community centers with
our donations and those of our guests.

The program generally starts at 8:00 AM
with a hearty breakfast and short drive to
the shoot.

In the field you will be assigned a field
assistant, who will provide you with shells
and refreshments and direct you to your
shooting stand.

Depending on the time of the year you will
shoot till noon when you will be treated to
an incredible barbeque lunch, shaded by
a unique hand-made hut, tasting some of
Argentina’s wonderful beef and superb
wines.

Afternoon begins at around 2 or 2:30 hr.,
and continues until almost dark.
There is no definite time to close the
shoot.

Return to the lodge for cocktails and
early dinner.

Appertanly they feed village children with the doves. Win- Win

No they supply the Shells @ $16/ Box US for 28 Ga $14 12/20 Ga- No shells can be brought in to the country they can be confiscated at the airport

The rental gun selection is better than anything I own. It is a pain traveling with one and they charge steep fees and I don't want to have to keep eye on it traveling that far away.

Out of North America it's a ball and chain.

PM Me I will send you the Lodge literature guide. Answers all the questions I had.

For years I've dreamt of shooting my way through a few boxes in the am then taking an hour or so nap under a tree by a beautiful river after downing 2-3 glasses of local red and a nice steak. If we can pick our own heaven that will be part of mine.

BA is awesome. Check out a show called Fuerza Bruta - like an interactive cirque show. If you're into airplanes the city airport is cool for spotting. Nice talent and good eats at Bar Isabel. Talk to somebody at your hotel and they'll set you up with $ exchange or do what's mentioned above. Lots of good info here already. Palermo is a good area to hang out in for first timers. Have fun
